The incident took place in the evening. The victim Ankit’s mother stated that after celebrating Holi, he was taking a bath when the suspects, including Kunal, started throwing eggs on him from the washroom’s window. When she objected to the hurling of eggs, an argument broke out. “I was clearing the broken eggs thrown by the suspects when Ankit came out of the washroom and confronted the youths,” she said. The dispute escalated as Ankit’s friend Saurav also arrived there. Kunal and youths accompanying him attacked Ankit and Saurav with sharp weapons, leaving both seriously injured. The assailants fled the scene after the attack. Keeping in view the direct observation of Swachh Survekshan in next few days, MC Commissioner Amit Kumar formed various teams of the sanitation wing to check violations of the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) rules in the city. The teams, headed by chief sanitation inspectors, inspected markets across the city and found many shopkeepers using and storing plastic carry bags. A total of 165 violators were challaned — 43 for selling/using plastic carry bags, 68 for sanitation/littering in public place, 52 for nonsegregation of waste and one each for C&D waste and horticulture waste dumping. Challans ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 20,000 were imposed on defaulters. While the Porsche driver has been booked under Section 106 (causing death due to negligence), a bailable offence, the Polo driver faces the case under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), which is a non-bailable offence. 4 days after Mohali brawl, neighbour held for death of 39-year-old researcher Tribune News Service Mohali, March 15 The police arrested a Sector66 resident on the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder after his neighbouur, Abhishek Swarnkar, a 39-year-old IISER researcher, died in an altercation over a parkingrelated issue on March 11. The accused has been identified as Maninderpal Singh, alias Monty. According to the information, he and Abhishek had a heated argument over parking a bike in the neighbourhood that Victim Abhishek Swarnkar turned violent. The accused was absconding since then. A team, led by Phase-11 station house officer (SHO) Gagandeep, arrested him today. The accused, an IT professional with a Mohali-based software firm, lives with his family in the house adjacent to the victim's. Deputy Superintendent of Police (City-2) Harsimran Singh Bal said, "The accused will be produced before the Duty Magistrate on Sunday." The victim's family, natives of Jharkhand, said, "He said 'teri gaadi uda dunga' (I will knock your bike over). When Abhishek said we will file a complaint, he pushed him forcefully." The victim was reportedly undergoing treatment for a kidney-related problem at the PGI. His mother Malti Devi claimed that their next- door neighbours had been harassing them over the parking of their son's bike for the past one year. "We rented this house in December 2023 as it was near IISER where my son was doing research. Abhishek had changed three to four spots in the neighbourhood for parking his bike but he (Monty) always had a problem. When Abhishek parked somewhere else, other neighbours started objecting. He used to tell Abhishek to park his bike over the cover of a gutter, but it was an uneven place," she added. Holi quarrels keep police on toes Chandigarh, March 15 Incidents of quarrel kept the UT police on their toes on Holi as 205 plaints were attended to by cops. The police received a total of 1,096 calls, of which 483 were actionable. Following the plaints, PCR teams visited 449 locations. Ambulances were dispatched to 69 spots and fire engines to four. Apart from the quarrel incidents, the police also responded to 35 accident calls, 18 cases of noise pollution, 14 complaints about public nuisance and two fire-related emergencies. The accused was reportedly in an inebriated condition. Constable Sukhdarshan and Home Guard Rajesh were conducting a night check when they signalled a Baleno car to stop. While both, along with the car driver, identified as Samarth Dua, were standing near the vehicle, a speeding Polo car coming from the Zirakpur side crashed into them. The impact was so severe that the Baleno was flung to nearly 25 metres. The two cops and Dua died on the spot. The naka in charge, ASI Satnam Singh, said the Polo driver accelerated upon seeing the checkpoint, leading to the crash. The police recovered bottles of liquor and snacks from the vehicle. The accused driver, identified as Govind, alias Khundu, a resident of Hallo Majra, was travelling with his friends. They sustained injuries and were admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32. On getting information, the police dispatched teams, along with a fire engine, to the spot. The police have registered a murder case against Kunal and others. 17-year-old boy stabbed to death by juveniles at Balongi Mohali, March 15 A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death by a group of juveniles at Balongi during the Holi celebrations on Friday. Akash was stabbed in the back over an old rivalry with a group of youths. The juveniles attacked Akash near the water tank in Balongi. He walked up to some distance and collapsed. Members of his family took him to the Phase 6 Civil Hos- pital where the doctors declared him dead on arrival. A murder case was registered against five assailants and they were detained. The police said more arrests were likely after the investigation. 14-year-old missing A 14-year-old boy went missing in Jhampur village on Friday.
