With the virus infection confirmed in the 24-year-old man who died at a hospital last week, the health department has placed the district on high alert, initiating contact tracing and testing of individuals in the contact list. Health Minister Veena George on Monday said, 175 people have been included in the contact list of the Nipah victim. Of them, 10 are under treatment at the Manjeri Government Medical College Hospital with suspected Nipah symptoms. As many as 126 individuals are in the primary contact list and 49 in the secondary contact list. Among them, 74 are healthcare workers. A total of 104 people in the primary contact list are in the high-risk category . The minister said that samples from 13 people have been sent for testing, with results pending. The youth, a resident of Naduvath in Thiruvali panchayat, had been undergoing treatment for fever at a private hospital in Perinthalmanna, where he died on September 9. He was pursuing postgraduation in Bengaluru and had come home on August 23. While the health department has not officially announced that any of the victim’s friends in Ben- galuru are under observation, a source confirmed that at least six of his friends have been advised to remain vigilant. The health department on Monday published the travel details, including a route map, of the youth. He developed a fever on September 5 and sought treatment at four different hospitals in the district. Additionally he had travelled to , various places with his friends. Malappuram District Medical Officer R Renuka said 13 people in the contact list are under observation in the district. “Of them, 10 are at the Manjeri Government MCH, and three are in home isolation. Samples from all individuals in the contact list will be tested following Nipah protocol,” the DMO said. Meanwhile, the district administration, based on instructions from the health department, has imposed strict restrictions across the district to prevent the spread of the virus infection. As part of these measures, Wards 4, 5, 6, and 7 of Thiruvali panchayat and Ward 7 of Mampad panchayat, have been declared as containment zones. Kunjumol beat cancer but fell to hit-and-run accident Ra h u l R @Kollam The village of Mynagappally is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 47-year-old Kunjumol, a cancer survivor whose life was cut short in a hit-and-run accident on Sunday Known for her . resilience and deep commitment to her community Kunju, mol had survived breast cancer but could not survive the road accident. According to family members, Kunjumol had been receiving treatment at the Regional Cancer Centre in Thiruvananthapuram for the past three years. Her battle with cancer was a testament to her strength and she had emerged as a symbol of hope for society . The accident happened at 5.30pm in Mynagappally when a car hit the scooter on which Kunjumol and her sister-in-law Fauzia were travelling. The car then ran over Kunjumol’s body . The accused, Karunagappally resident Ajmal (29) and Neyyattinkara resident Dr Sreekutty (27), fled the scene but were arrested by the Sasthamcotta police on Monday According to . the police, Ajmal, who was driving, and Sreekutty were both intoxicated. With God’s grace, she was completely cured of cancer. She had promised to provide payasam to the mosque and had gone to buy ingredients. Unfortunately, she has left us forever,” said P M Sayid, a family friend. Kunjumol’s husband Noushad, who works as a labourer at the Food Corporation of India godown in Kollam, was left devastated. She had started a small stationery shop last year to support her family In recent . weeks, she had even travelled to Kollam to purchase clothing for sale in her shop. “She was a fighter, not just against cancer but for her family. Cancer is a disease that tests every aspect of a family’s strength, emotionally and financially. Kunjumol and her family stood strong and overcame it together. They were just starting to rebuild their lives,” said B Reghunathan Pillai, a neighbour. She is survived by her husband and two daughters, Sophiya and Ansiya. The party pledged to work towards granting statehood and restoring the Durbar Move — shifting of Secretariat between twin capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu for six months each. “We will pass the resolution in the first session of the assembly in favour of the Durbar Move,” it stated. But it made no mention of the controversial Article 370 that had given J&K special status. Article 370 was read down the Centre on August 5, 2019. The Congress also pledged to give first priority to those domiciled in J&K for jobs, govern- ment contracts, land allocation and concessions on utilising natural resources. It promised a white paper on corruption and establish a Lokayukta within the first 100 days to probe charges against officials allegedly involved in scams over the past 10 years. The Congress also promised to confer all rights on Displaced Persons from 1947, 1965 and 1971 and West Pakistan Refugees, including rights to sell and transfer allotted state land and Evacuee Properties.
