Delivering his 11th consecutive speech from the ramparts of Red Fort, Modi emphasised the need for stringent action against gender crimes, calling for tougher measures and instilling fear among perpetrators — in the context of the horrific rape-murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata — to ensure justice for women. Expressing concern over the recent unrest in Bangladesh and the attacks on Hindus, he urged the new government there to guarantee their safety . The prime minister also categorically told the world that India’s progress does not pose a threat to anyone. “While we progress as a country the chal, lenges will also increase, especially externally I want to con. vey to such forces that India’s development will not pose a threat to anyone,” he averred. Pitching for a uniform civil code, Modi said, “A secular civil code is the need of the hour. A significant segment of our population recognises that our current civil code is communal and discriminatory .” Modi also announced plans to create 75,000 new medical seats in five years to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in the country . Oppn rap In an apparent jibe at the Opposition, he said some people can’t digest the growth in the country. “I urge you to reject such elements who don’t see development unless it benefit them individually.” Hoisting the national flag on the ramparts of Fort St George in Chennai, marking the 78th Independence Day, Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday announced the state’s plan to launch pharmacy outlets, named ‘Mudhalvar Marunthagam’ (Chief Minister’s Pharmacy) on next Pongal day (January 14, 2025) to ensure availability of generic and other medicines at low cost to the people. A total of 1,000 such pharmacies will be opened in the first phase. To ensure effective implementation of the scheme, the government will provide loan assistance and grants-in-aid of `3 lakh to pharmacists and co-operative societies, he said. Stalin also announced Mudhalvarin Kakkum Karangal (Chief Minister’s Protective Hands), a scheme that will help ex-servicemen get loans up to `1 crore from banks to start businesses and is expected to benefit 400 ex-servicemen in the state. In his Independence Day address, the CM said the poor who approach government hospitals are being provided excellent treatment and quality medicines but middle-class families getting treated in private hospitals are being forced to pay high price for medicines.
