Amidst incessant rain, 149th Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan kicks off with rousing Shehnai strains Aparna Banerji Jalandhar, December 27 The 149th Shree Baba Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan got off to a rousing start amidst the strains of Shehnai, rousing Dhrupad, Harmonium jugalbandi and vocals at the Shree Ram Hall, on the premises of the Shri Devi Talab Mandir in Jalandhar on a rainy evening on Friday. Marked usually by chilly and foggy winters every year, the opening day of the Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan this year witnessed incessant rainfall in Jalandhar all throughout the day which lowered temperatures by four notches and flooded the main pandal where the sammelan was scheduled to be held. However, organisers moved the sammelan to the cosy Shri Ram Hall, which has been the chosen venue for many other Harivallabh events, similarly affected by rains on previous occasions too. Artistes began their concert by an about two to three hours delay at the hall. Even amidst heavy rain a gathering of about a decent music lovers, though relatively thinner, turned up for the event and sat until late in the night to hear recital of music with various instruments. The festival started with the auspicious Shehnai strains in its first event, presented by Pt Rudresh Bhajantri, who was accompanied on the Swarmandal by Bhimsen Bhajantri, on Sur TRIBUNE PHOTO: SARABJIT SINGH Tribune News Service Hoshiarpur, December 27 Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had a deep connection with Hoshiarpur. The city played an important role in his education. He started his career as teacher in the city and then went on to become one of the world’s renowned economists. If it is said that Dr Manmohan Singh learned the basics of economics in Hoshiarpur itself, it would not be an exaggeration. He studied economics while living here and started teaching the same subject. In fact, after the Partition of the country in 1947, his family settled in Amritsar. Manmohan Singh chose Hoshiarpur to continue his studies, because after the Partition, classes of Panjab University were held here. In 1952, Manmohan Singh passed BCom from Panjab University College (now known as Government College, Hoshiarpur) here. After that he also completed his MA (Economics) from the same college. Later, after studying further in India and abroad, he returned to Hoshiarpur once again and taught economics as a lecturer in the same college from where he himself had studied. After Panjab University shifted to Chandigarh, he too shifted there. Remembering Dr Singh as a very humble, dedicated and inspiring personality, the MP said the loss to the country due to his departure was irreparable. Recalling Dr Singh’s humility, the MP said when she was to be included in the Cabinet, she was on a tour of the Northeast with a parliamentary committee. During this time, she received a call from the Cabinet Secretary from Delhi who told her that the Prime Minister would Shehnai by Shruti Bhajantri, and on Tabla, Saptak Sharma provided accompaniment and on Shehnai, Kapil Sharma lent support to the musician. Classical music warmed up the atmosphere as recitals progressed. People sipped tea and savoured eatables from a few stalls still open, while a congregation of avid music lovers, nodded their heads to recitals by artistes in the compact hall. Organisers said depending on the weather, the venue would later be shifted back to the main open pandal, as the skies cleared. He received education from the government college here and also served as a professor at the same institution. His death is a big loss not only for the Congress, but for the entire country. Santosh Chaudhary said Dr Singh addressed her very politely and asked where she was. Knowing that she was in the Northeast, Dr Singh told her that he wanted to expand the Cabinet, so she should return to Delhi within two days. She said Dr Singh as his Cabinet colleague always supported her in every way. “When I proposed to open a Central School, a medical college and start a direct train from Hoshiarpur to Delhi, Dr Singh immediately agreed to it. The Central School at Gajjan in Hoshiarpur is the first such school in the country which has been built in the rural area,” Santosh Chaudhary said. Jalandhar, December 27 Alleging that the administrative machinery and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) were hand in gloves during the conduct of recently-held Municipal Corporation (MC) elections, Congress leaders on Thursday alleged that nomination papers filed by the AAP candidates, who won civic body polls, were full of mistakes. Congress MLAs Pargat Singh and Bawa Henry, District Congress Committee chief Rajinder Beri and lawyer Parminder Vig alleged that many candidates had left blanks in the form unfilled. Citing the case of Ward No. 80 winner AAP candidate Ashwani Kumar Aggarwal, they pointed out that he had not even mentioned which election he was contesting and from which ward. “Even columns where the candidate has to give the serial and ward number of his proposer have been left blank. All these mistakes are completely unacceptable. The Returning Officer (RO) should have outrightly rejected nomination papers of the candidate,” they said. They also showed a copy of the papers of Ward No. 10 and 11 AAP candidates — Balbir Bittu and his wife Karamjeet Kaur — who won the MC polls. “The column ‘cash in hand’ is not filled. The notary attestation is not proper and again it is a clear case of rejection of papers,” pointed out Vig. He said a panel of lawyers had been set up at the Congress Bhawan to see if forms of all Congress candidates were in proper order, but the AAP seemed to have taken the process of filing papers too casually. Henry said, “We will take all such matters to the Election Tribunal once a notification is issued for its formation. We will also move a criminal complaint against the Returning Officer with the city police for not rejecting papers for such uncalled for anomalies during scrutiny.” He said the objection moved by them against AAP councillor Amit Dhall, who won from Ward No. 24, too would be taken up before the Tribunal as per the Punjab and Haryana High Court order on the matter. The Congress leaders also pointed out that supplementary voter lists was issued for every ward. “As many as 1,000 voters have been added in Ward Nos. 10 and 11, which is unusually high for a ward with 6,000 to 7,000 voters. A bigger discrepancy is the supplementary voter lists without photos of voters and their voter ID number. So, there could be no check on whether voters who cast votes in the MC elections are genuine or fake,” they said.
