Amritsar, November 24 Four days after the Jandiala police booked gangsterturned-cross-border smuggler Harpreet Singh, alias Happy Jatt, for demanding extortion from a local trader, the Amritsar (Rural) police arrested his four accomplices in this connection. Those arrested were identified as Lovepreet Singh, alias Love, of Jotisar Colony, Jandiala, Navjot Singh of Jandiala, Navjot Singh of Jagatpura village and Rajbir Singh of Khalchian. They were arrested in connection with a case in which Happy Jatt had demanded extortion from Heera Lal, a resident of Rayya. The victim runs an utensil shop. Heera Lal said he got a call from a virtual number in which the caller identified himself as Happy Jatt and demand- ed money from him. The victim said the caller threatened to kill him and his family in case he failed to give money. A case under Section 308 (4) was registered against Happy Jatt following victim’s complaint. Mukhtiar Singh, SHO, Jandiala Guru police station, said after preliminary probe, Happy Jatt’s accomplices were identified and arrested by the police. — TNS Tarn Taran, November 24 The Sadar police claimed to have solved a blind murder case in which body of the victim, identified as Surjit Singh (45), a resident of Bhai Manjh Road, Kot Mit Singh, Amritsar, was recovered from fields at Piddi village on the Tarn Taran-Patti road on November 21. Extra-marital relations of the wife of the deceased were cited as the reason behind his murder. SSP Abhimanyu Rana said here today that Manpreet Kaur, wife of the deceased, besides her paramour Jaspal Singh, a resident of the Tarn Taran road, Amritsar, and his friend Gurmeet Singh Babba, a resident of the Sultanwind road, Three suspects, including wife of the deceased, in custody of the Tarn Taran Sadar police. The department arrested the passenger and initiated further investigation into the matter. According to information, the passenger arrived at the Amritsar airport from Dubai by a SpiceJet flight. When department officials’ noticed suspicious activities of the passenger, they inter- One killed in road accident Tarn Taran, November 24 A resident of Gharka village falling under the Chohla Sahib police station, identified as Budhu Singh (45), died in a road accident on Saturday. The family of the deceased found his body on roadside nearby Gujarpura village. Balwinder Singh, elder brother of the deceased, said Budhu Singh left home for doing labour work near Gujarpura village on Saturday morning. When he did not return home till late evening, his family started searching for him. Balwinder Singh said they found Budhu Singh’s body lying on the roadside near Gujarpura village. He said it appeared that Budhu Singh was run over by some unidentified vehicle. ASI Gurmukh Singh said a case under Sections 106 (1) and 281 of the BNS had been registered in this regard. — OC cepted him. The trader, identified as Harbhajan Singh of Sherobagha village, was later released on bail. Harminder Singh, manager, Media Software Solutions, Ludhiana, said his firm had a tie-up with garment brands, including Zara, Hugo, Boss, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, US Polo and Levis, to check showrooms and shops involved in selling garments after fixing fake logos of top brands. He said they received tip-off that Fashion Villa was involved in such malpractice. Trader booked for violation of Copyright Act Amritsar, November 24 Panic gripped Ajnala after a suspected IED (Improvised explosive device) was found near a police station here today morning. The police, including bomb disposal squad, anti-sabotage team and senior officials, reached the spot and started an investigation. The police are checking footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the area to find clues about persons who had dumped the suspected IED outside the police station. Amritsar (Rural) SSP Charanjit Singh said the bomb disposal squad had collected a bomb like object and sent it for further examination to ascertain whether it was an explosive or a mischievous act by some persons. “The police have initiated action as per standard operational procedure to ensure safety of the people. The road outside Ajnala police station has been closed for the normal traffic,” he said, while adding that the police had found vital clues in the case and further probe was on. The police are probing all possible angles, including an act of terrorism, targeting the police station. This was the same police station which his throat with a sharp weapon and threw his body in fields of Piddi village. The victim’s body was recovered by the police on November 21. Amritsar, November 24 While stating that all efforts were being made to provide better government services to the general public, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sakshi Sawhney said a camp under AAP Sarkaar AAP De Dwar scheme of the state government would be organised in the border areas of the Ramdas block here on November 26. She said the camp would be organised at the Block Development and Panchayat Office, Ramdas, at 9.30 am during which officials of various government departments would remain present to address problems of the public. She said officials of the Labour Department, District Industries Centre, Punjab Skill Development Centre, District Bureau of Employment and Enterprises, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Dairy Development Department, Common Service Centre, Punjab State Rural Livelihood Mission and others would be present at the camp. Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal inaugurates road widening project in Ajnala on Sunday. ~27 crore to be spent on road widening in Ajnala Amritsar, November 24 A project of widening roads in the Ajnala rural constituency here was inaugurated by local MLA and Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, Dhaliwal said in the first phase, 35 km of various roads would be widened. He said the project would be completed at a cost of Rs 27 crore. The minister said all link roads connecting the rural areas would be widened keeping in view of the increase in vehicular traffic. He said potholed roads were also being repaired. Dhaliwal said the Ajnala rural belt had been ignored for the past many decades by subsequent governments. He said during the past two-andhalf-year of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government rule in Punjab, various projects for the development of the area had been initiated. The minister claimed that all public works, including paving of streets, installing streetlights and CCTV cameras, were being undertaken so that residents could get better civic amenities. While talking about the recent victory of the AAP in bypolls of the three Assembly segments, Dhaliwal said the people had reassured their faith in Bhagwant Mann-led state government. He said the party would win 2027 Assembly elections with a bigger majority. — TNS 8 universities without VCs: Aujla Sidhu couple enjoys tea at stall on Cooper Road Amritsar, November 24 Claiming that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government was playing havoc with higher education in Punjab, MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla said eight universities of the state were already working without Vice Chancellors (VCs). Addressing mediapersons here on Sunday, he said six universities of Punjab were already working without VCs and now two more prestigious universities had joined the row. He demanded that the government should appoint VCs of these eight universities as soon as possible. Giving information through a press briefing, Aujla said prestigious institutions of higher education in Punjab, including Punjabi University, Patiala, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University, Bathinda, Shaheed Bhagat Singh State University, Fer- MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla ozepur, Sardar Beant Singh State University, Gurdaspur, Guru Ravidas Ayurved University, Hoshiarpur, and Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University, Patiala, had been functioning without regular VCs from three months to four years. Aujla said the extended tenure of the current Guru Nanak Dev University VC Dr Jaspal Singh ended on November 16. Similar was the situation in Sri Guru Teg Bahadur State University of Law. The MP said the Chancellor’s Office (Governor of Punjab) did not issue any order to give the charge of both universities to the Secretary, Higher Education. He said since April 25, 2024, the charge of Punjabi University VC was held by KK Yadav (IAS), Principal Secretary, Higher Education. The extended tenure of Executive VC KK Yadav would end on November 25, he said. Aujla said senior faculty member Dr Sandeep Kansal was holding the Executive VC charge of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University. Dressed in their best, Navjot Singh Sidhu along with his wife Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu today had their morning tea at this stall. Visibly elated Sidhu, sharing a video clip on social media, said it was after four months that he was taking his wife on a day out tour in Amritsar. The PET (positron emission tomography) scan test conducted on her in Amritsar had testified that she was clinically cancer free, he said. Dr Sidhu also blushed when Sidhu praised her with the famous Bollywood number ‘Ye Chand Sa Roshan Chehra…Zulfo Ka Rang Sunehra’ and also danced to the tune. Former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu at tea stall in Amritsar. On reaching the tea stall, Sidhu met its proprietor warmly. “Eh visit ‘Noni’ (Dr Sidhu’s pet name) de theek hon di khushi vich hai’ (This visit is to express happiness on my wife’s recovery), said Sidhu. The couple preferred to sit on wooden stools on the road lane alongside with other visitors and had tea in ‘glassi’ (glasses) instead of cups. Sidhu also praised the tea served to them in his one-liner — “Gulistan me ja ke har gul ko dekha…na teri chai jaise rangat hai na teri chai jaise khushboo hai” (Watched every flower in the flower land, but no flower had the colour and scent like your tea has).” The couple had a cup of tea each. Speaking about “kachauri” Sidhu said to his wife, “You can just smell its aroma and watch it, but can never eat it. Only, I will eat it.”
