OC 3 of Amritsar killed in road mishap Kid among the deceased |Two others seriously injured |Truck driver flees Tribune News Service Jalandhar, November 18 A tragic road accident near a hotel, close to the Pathankot Bypass, claimed three lives, including a child, and left two others seriously injured on Monday evening. The collision between a car and an overloaded truck was so severe that both vehicles overturned, leaving the car completely wrecked. Seven family members — two men, three women and two children — in a car were going to Ludhiana to visit the ailing mother of the driver, who was hospitalised. According to witnesses, the truck, which was overloaded with paddy, attempted to overtake the car, resulting in the collision. The impact caused both vehicles to lose balance, with the truck crossing the divider and overturning on the opposite lane. The deceased have been identified as Palak, her son Piyush and another woman Jyoti Arora, while those injured have been identified as Meena and Ansh (child), and the two men Varun and Aman were reportedly taken out safe. The family hails from Amritsar, having their residence near Hathi Gate, as The remains of the car that met with a road accident near Lamba Pind Chowk in Jalandhar. per the police. Passersby immediately rushed to help, managing to rescue some passengers from the mangled car. However, two of the deceased and another injured woman had to be extricated using hydraulic cutters. Among the fatalities were two women and a child, whose bodies were sent for post-mortem to the Civil Hospital. ASI Satpal and personnel of the Sadak Surakhya Force, who reached the spot, confirmed that the injured — a man, a woman and a child— were taken to a private hospital on the highway, while the car driver was safely taken out. However, the child reportedly suffered a broken arm, while the woman sustained severe injuries. SHO Gurmukh Singh of Police Station Division No. 8 said the truck driver fled the scene, leaving the vehicle behind. He said preliminary investigations suggest that the truck’s attempt to overtake led to the crash. “The overloaded truck overturned partially onto the car, causing severe damage. The truck also damaged the road divider and blocked one side of the highway, leading to heavy traffic congestion,” Singh said. He said they had recorded the car driver’s statement and are working to locate the truck’s owner and the absconding driver. “An FIR will be filed under relevant sections of the BNS and further investigation is on,” added Singh. He further said the highway was cleared after hours of disruption. DC Komal Mittal leads the flag march in Chabbewal. Jalandhar, November 18 Frustrated by years of inaction, residents of Model Town here have announced an indefinite protest at the Shivpuri garbage dump site starting December 1. The Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing the residents, has asked the Municipal Corporation (MC) to deliver on its long-standing promise to permanently shut the dump, which has caused immense suffering to those living nearby and having their businesses and offices in the vicinity. The Shivpuri dump, which receives waste from about 15 wards, has turned into a massive public health hazard. Residents complain of foul smell, increased traffic disruptions, stray cattle and the daily influx of rag-pickers and MC vehicles unloading garbage. Adding to their anguish is the fact that the dump is located right next to a cremation ground, where people attending funeral rites often face unbearable conditions due to the stench. In a letter to Municipal Commissioner Gautam Jain, the JAC has demanded the site to be closed by November 30. They warned that the failure to act would leave them with no choice but to begin an indefinite protest at the dump from December 1. Speaking to Jalandhar Tribune, Jaswinder Singh Sahni, a JAC member, said: “Jalandhar may be branded as a smart city, but the ground reality is different. The MC has no concrete waste management plan. Illegal garbage dumps have mushroomed all over the city, including public roads, which violates National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines.” He said the dump, stretching over 300-400 metres, is a major source of pollution. “Residents of the nearby colonies such as Kewal Vihar are forced to live in unbearable conditions. We have retired Army officers living next to this dump, enduring this stench every day. The proximity of the dump to the cremation ground only adds salt to injury,” said Sahni. JAC members pointed out that Jain had repeatedly promised that the dump would only operate temporarily and that waste would be cleared daily by 11 am. However, they claimed that these assurances had gone unfulfilled. “Half of the city’s garbage is dumped here day and night. The Commission- A garbage dump in Model Town, Jalandhar. er’s words have become meaningless,” said Varinder Malik, another JAC member. At a recent meeting, JAC leaders, including Jathedar Jagjit Singh Gaba, Varinder Malik, Jaswinder Sahni, Manmeet Singh Sodhi and others resolved to hold both MC and the government accountable if the dump was not closed by November 30. “This dump is Drug network busted, 2 held with 102 kg poppy husk Age no deterrence for bizman-swimmer Our Correspondent PHAGWARA,NOVEMBER 18 In a major breakthrough against drug trafficking, the Jalandhar Rural Police have busted an inter-state poppy husk smuggling network and arrested two after recovering 102 kg of poppy husk being transported in a specially modified truck, said SSP Jalandhar Rural, Harka, mal Preet Singh Khakh here on Monday. Aakanksha N Bhardwaj Tribune News Service Jalandhar, November 18 There is no stopping for 75year-old city industrialist Parveen Kamal. He isn’t letting his age come in the way of love for sports. The age has not made him sit at home instead he is getting active with time. He recently won three medals in the National Swimming Championship that was held in Bhopal from November 10-12.
