TRIBUNE PHOTO: MALKIAT SINGH Phagwara, November 17 In an early morning cordon and search operation (CASO) against drugs, the Jalandhar rural police arrested five persons, including a wanted woman smuggler, and seized significant quantities of narcotics from Ganna village in Phillaur sub-division on Sunday. The operation, which involved cordoning off the entire village before conducting systematic searches, was carried out under the direct supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police, Phillaur, Swaran Singh Bal. Three separate teams, led by SHO, Phillaur (Rural), strategically positioned themselves around the village perimeter before launching coordinated raids at multiple locations. Speaking about the success of the operation, Senior Superintendent of Police (Jalandhar Rural) Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh said, “The CASO operation was meticulously planned after receiving specific intelligence inputs about drug peddling activities in Ganna village. The police teams first sealed all entry and exit points before conducting house-to-house searches in identified areas.” During the operation, which lasted several hours, the police teams made a series of arrests and recoveries. The first team cordoned off the Lassara village area and apprehended Jatinder Kumar (alias Bya), son of Chaman Lal, and Davinder Kumar, alias Mota, The cordon and search operation (CASO) against drugs underway at Phagwara. son of Tek Chand. The team recovered 150 etizolam tablets from their possession. Simultaneously, the second team secured another sector of Ganna village, leading to the arrest of Rohan Kumar, alias Shekhu/Buddi, son of Raj Kumar, and the recovery of 12 gram of heroin. In a parallel action, the third team arrested Ninder, alias Morni, wife of Surjit Kumar, seizing another 150 etizolam tablets. The operation achieved a significant breakthrough with the arrest of Kashmir Kaur, wife of Naseeb Chand, who had been evading arrest in connection with an FIR No. 273 dated October 9, 2024, registered under Sections 21, 29, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act at Phillaur police station. Her arrest came after the police teams systematically narrowed down the search perimeter. Following the successful CASO operation, the police have registered three separate cases under the NDPS Act. The total recovery includes 12 grams of heroin and 300 etizolam tablets, highlighting the diverse nature of drug trafficking in the region. “CASO operations are par- ticularly effective in areas where drug peddlers might try to escape or dispose of contraband. By securing the entire area first, the police teams ensure the maximum operational success,” a police official said. The accused will be produced before a local court, where the police will seek their remand for further investigation into the broader drug trafficking network operating in the region. Residents can share information about drug trafficking with the Jalandhar rural police, said SSP Khakh. Residents called for immediate action to address the severe bottlenecks, prompting CP-Jalandhar to assure them that alternative routes and traffic diversions were being planned to ease the situation. Eve-teasing near schools was another major issue brought to light by the Sarpanch of Jamsher Khas, who reported disturbances caused by boys loitering around school premises. The Commissioner emphasised that such behaviour would not be tolerated and assured them that ERS vehicles would patrol school areas to ensure student safety. JCT Mill workers form new union Jalandhar, November 17 Mandeep Kaur Khurana, a city-based dietician, recently made it to the 20th National Masters Swimming Championship that was held in Bhopal in MP from November 10-12. “I was the sole female swimmer representing Punjab in the competition,” Mandeep said. It was just a year ago that Mandeep started learning swimming just as a hobby but soon she got so interested and started taking professional training. In the championship, she participated in four different race formats: 50 metres, 100 metres, 200 metres, and 400 metres. “It wasn’t easy. I had to work harder than I ever imagined to reach this level,” Mandeep stated. She threw light on her intense training schedule, “There were times when I felt like giving up, but the thought of representing my state and proving to myself that I could do it kept me going.” As Mandeep looks ahead, she remains committed to pushing herself even further. “This is just the beginning. I’m going to keep working harder and aim for even bigger achievements,” she said.— TNS Phagwara, November 17 Hundreds of workers from JCT Mills, engaged in a prolonged struggle to claim their pending dues, convened a meeting at Thapar Colony here today. Frustrated with the alleged inaction and collusion of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) with the mill management, the workers unanimously decided to form a new union, the JCT Mill Mazdoor Union. Ravi Sidhu was elected its president. The workers criticised INTUC’s local leadership, accusing it of failing to advocate for their rights and instead siding with mill owners. They alleged that INTUC’s Phagwara unit president and officials had compromised by helping a select few workers secure partial dues while leaving the majority of the 3,000strong workforce in the lurch. The newly formed union appointed Sidhu as president. Sidhu subsequently announced the core leadership team: Chairman-Sunil Pandey; vice-presidentShardanand Singh; general secretary-Naval Kishore Singh; secretary-Anil Mishra; treasurer-Dharmendra Singh; and media in-charge-Madan Kumar Mishra. The executive committee also includes Tarun Sharma Lucky, Jasvir Jassi, Ram Ishwar Kumar and several others. The three-day operation was part of an ongoing effort to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and promote safer streets across the city. Special nakas were set up at key locations, including markets and crowded areas, while foot patrolling was intensified in high-footfall zones such as shopping malls. The violations addressed included triple riding on motorcycles, underage driving, unauthorised vehicles and the use of black films on car windows. The Vahan app was used to verify vehicle authenticity, adding a digital edge to the enforcement. The drive was a coordinated effort under the supervision of Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs), with police stations, Emergency Response System (ERS) teams and the Field Media Team (FMT) working together to ensure swift action and public awareness. The impounding of vehicles without proper documentation and targeted inspections aimed to reinforce the importance of adhering to traffic laws. Officials highlighted the importance of these measures in creating safer roads for residents and visitors. “This initiative reflects our commitment to road safety and reducing traffic violations. Ensuring compliance with regulations is essential for the well-being of all,” said a police spokesperson. He said this successful operation demonstrated the city police’s unwavering dedication to maintaining order and safety on city roads. “Such drives will continue in the coming days as well until our mission to foster a secure and disciplined traffic environment for all is not achieved”, he added.
