The deceased was pursuing MBA course at the LPU. Phagwara SDM Jashanjit Singh along with DSP Bharat Bhushan and SHO Balwinder Singh Bhullar rushed to the spot. The police handed over body of the deceased to her family members who arrived in Phagwara on Tuesday morning. Investigating Officer (IO) Avtar Lal said the suspect was identified as Mohinder Singh, a resident of Talwann village. The IO said the police received a WhatsApp image of crop residue set on fire at fields in Talwann village on October 3, but could not verify the spot due to darkness. The police visited the field next day with a cluster officer to verify the incident. The IO said a case under Section 223 of the BNS was registered against the suspect who was released on bail. OC Our Correspondent Hoshiarpur, November 5 Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal said Aadhaar issued by the Government of India was an important identity card that provides various benefits to citizens. The Aadhaar card could be used as proof of identity, address and age while applying for any government service, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) said. It was the foundation of India’s digital transformation promoting efficiency, transparency and inclusion in various sectors, the DC said. The DC said according to the report received from the UIDAI regarding Hoshiarpur district, 47,269 children under five years of age had not got their Aadhaar cards. Besides, mandatory biometric update was pend- health of the people would not be spared. The Health Department team also inspected fast food and other eatables at eateries and collected five samples of jaggery, sugar, dry dates, turmeric and Manchurian. The collected samples were sent to the Kharar lab for testing. Appropriate action would be taken after the sample report comes, Dr Bhatia said, while adding that keeping in mind the health of the people, food items were being checked. — OC Jalandhar, November 5 Fire broke out at a house in the bustling Khodian Mohalla bazaar area on Tuesday morning. Household goods were destroyed in the fire that also claimed the life of a pet dog. The fire, believed to have started from a temple lamp (Jot) in the house, quickly spread and consumed the entire structure. The incident unfolded around 11am with a 20-year-old woman trapped inside the house at the time. Nearby residents rushed to her aid and successfully rescued her before the fire spread in the house. However, the family dog, asleep in the house, could not be rescued and died in the blaze. Narrow lanes of the Khodian Mohalla bazaar posed a significant challenge for the Fire Department. Firefighters were forced to park their vehicles 150 metre away from the house and use long hoses to combat the blaze. One held with 480gm opium Phagwara, November 5 Continuing with its drive against drug smuggling, the Jalandhar (Rural) police achieved another success with the arrest of a drug peddler and recovery of 480 grams of opium concealed in a specially modified scooter compartment. The arrested suspect was identified as Tajinderpal Singh, alias Teji, a resident of Ward No. 7, Lohian Khas. The police also impounded his white TVS Jupiter scooter (bearing registration number PB08-DL-8723) that was used to ferry the contraband. SSP Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh said following a tip-off, a police team from the Lohian Khas police station led by SHO Yadwinder Singh laid a naka in the area under their jurisdiction. He said, “During checking, the police team intercepted a scooter. Compounding the issue, streetlights along the road are non-functional, creating unsafe conditions, especially at the night. Reports of snatchings on the road have also surfaced, adding to the distress of those who rely on this route. Commuters and local business owners alike have expressed frustration over the state of Lamma Pind Road. Rajesh Singh, a daily commuter, described the impact on his vehicle and the constant risk of accidents while driving on the road. “Every time I drive on this road, my vehicle suffers damage due to potholes. Vehicle repairs are expensive. I am always at the risk of getting involved in a serious accident while commuting on the road. There are no streetlights to illuminate the road and help residents drive safely,” he said. Roadside vendors face challenges with clouds of dust raised by passing vehicles. Vinod Kumar, who has a small stall along the road, shared his ordeal. “The dust is a constant problem. It settles on everything, making it difficult to breathe and affects my business. The poor road condition is impacting not just commuters, but also those who work here,” Kumar said.
