"It is a conspiracy by the BJP to choke the democratic structure in Panjab University. The court has deferred the hearing to December 10 and did not grant any interim relief to the petitioners. Panchkula, November 4 The elections to the posts of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor were deferred at the eleventh hour today after the returning officer, Municipal Joint Commissioner Simranjit Kaur, was taken ill. The Congress alleged the elections were put off as the BJP’s defeat was imminent. The new date for the elections is yet to be announced. The elections were to be held at the Kisan Bhawan in Sector 14. All 20 councillors — 11 of the BJP eight of the Con, gress and one of the JJP — and Mayor Kulbhushan Goyal were present there. Congress MLA Chander Mohan was also present when Simranjit Kaur was suddenly taken ill and had to be hospitalised. The Mayor, while talking to media persons, said, “All our councillors, along with nominated ones, were present for the elections. Kawaljit Kaur Gill, a resident of Sector 37, received a call from a woman on October 27. The caller told her that a SIM card issued in her name was being used in Mumbai. Immediately after the call, the victim received a Chandigarh, November 4 Mayor Kuldeep Kumar today called a meeting of heads of all departments of the Municipal Corporation (MC) to discuss the scope of revenue generation to prevent a financial crisis. The meeting was also attended by Amit Kumar, MC Commissioner. It discussed various issues and measures to generate more revenue for the MC. The police have arrested three suspects and recovered a countrymade pistol along with a car from them. Joginder Singh of Mansa district had reported that he visited his friend on November 2 and stayed at his flat. He alleged that the next morning, Kulwinder Singh, Raman, Kulwinder, Channi, Mandeep Singh and two unidentified persons forcibly entered the flat and kidnapped him at gunpoint. The kidnappers allegedly thrashed the victim and later pushed him out of the car in Sector 85, Mohali. They also snatched Joginder’s gold “kada”. The police registered a case at the Sector 49 station. During the investigation, the police visited Mansa and detained three accused, Kulwinderjit Singh, Ramandeep Singh and Khushpreet Singh, all local residents, for questioning, and later arrested them. The police said Kulwinderjit and Ramandeep had a criminal past. The allottee continues to occupy the space despite the expiry of contract and has failed to pay rent for the period thereafter. According to the notice issued by the court of Amit Kumar, Chief General Manager, CITCO, exercising the powers of Estate Officer, under Section 7 of the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1971, the contract of open space allotted to M/s AK Enterprises, ex-licencee of open space (500 sq ft) CITCO Shed Complex, Mauli Jagran, expired on March 31, 2023, but the proprietor has not handed over the possession of the space to CITCO. Lawyers of district courts to resume work today Tribune News Service Chandigarh, November 4 Advocates of the District Courts here have decided to resume work from tomorrow. Alleging inaction by the police in the case pertaining to the death of Neeraj Hans, former secretary, District Court Bar Association, Chandigarh, the advocates have not been attending the courts for more than 20 days. They alleged that the police were not taking any action against the accused persons. Hans died on October 7 after allegedly being punched in the chest during an argument with fellow advocates in the parking lot of the District Courts Complex, Sector 43. Hans was rushed to the hospital where he died during treatment. Three cross-FIRs were registered following his death. The decision to resume work was taken in the general house meeting held today. A committee has been formed and it would coordinate with the police in the investigation.
