(P8) P rime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari programme at Surat to build 24,800 rainwater harvesting structures across Gujarat to enhance rainwater harvesting and ensuring long-term water sustainability. Addressing people via videoconferencing, he said water conservation programme is not a matter of policy alone, but an effort in public service with responsibility. When future generations evaluate the present one, its attitude towards water conservation will be the first parameter on which they will form an opinion, Mr Modi said. This, he said, is because water is not just a resource but a question of life and future of the humanity. ''The meeting provided both sides with an opportunity to discuss the matters related to bilateral defence cooperation. IndiGo is making a “big mistake” by introducing a business class on its services, says a pioneer of low-cost aviation and the founder of Air Asia, Tony Fernandes. IMPHAL, 6 SEPTEMBER A 71-year-old man was killed and five others sustained injuries in Moirang town in Manipur’s Bishnupur district as suspected Kuki militants fired a rocket-propelled bomb from long range that exploded in the household compound of Manipur’s first chief minister, Mairengbam Koireng. The elderly man, identified as R.K. Rabei, was preparing a religious ceremony when the bomb exploded when he was hit by a splinter in the head. Five others, including a 13-year-old girl, suffered splinter injuries and were shifted to the hospital. Koireng’s house is located not far from the Indian National Army (INA) museum, where on 14 April 1944, Lt Col Shaukat Ali of the INA hoisted the Tricolour for the first time on Indian soil under the guidance of INA leader Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Citing the abrogation of Article 370 as one of the major achievements of the Narendra Modi government in its manifesto, the saffron party promised eradication of terrorism and separatism from Jammu and Kashmir. Among the other key promises, the BJP also mentioned a rehabilitation scheme for Kashmiri Pandits in its manifesto. The BJP has also promised that it will provide 20 per cent quota for Agniveers in Jammu and Kashmir government jobs and police recruitment, and will follow the Jammu-Kashmir reservation policy without affecting the general quota. Speaking at the launch of the party's manifesto, Mr Shah asserted that now Article 370 has become a thing of the past and it is not a part of the Constitution. "I have read the agenda of NC and seen the silent support of NC, but I want to make it clear that Article 370 is a thing of the past and it'll never return again, we will not let that happen. Article 370 was the thing that gave weapons and stones in the hands of the youth. It's the spirit of separatism that used to force youth towards terrorism," Mr Shah said. The Union Home Minister further stressed that Jammu and Kashmir has always been part of India and that the government is focused on fighting terrorism and separatism. "Our party believes that J&K has always been part of India and it will remain so. Till 2014, J&K always remained in the shadow of separatism and terrorism. Different state and non-state actors kept the state unstable. All the governments dealt with the state with a policy of appeasement. Whenever the history of J&K is written, these ten years after 2014 will be marked as a golden period for the state." Mr Shah said. Speaking about the rehabilitation scheme for Kashmiri Pandits mentioned in the party's manifesto, Mr Shah said the scheme will be very detailed adding that "we will look for complete rehabilitation". The Union Home Minister said many Kashmiri Pandits and people from the Sikh community who left when terrorism was at its peak were forced to sell their properties. “We have already started working in this regard - either returning their properties or providing the amount for their properties. We are towards the completion of rehabilitation of 6,000 people," Mr Shah said about the scheme. Focusing on women-led development in the UT, the BJP has promised to implement 'Maa Samman Yojana' to provide Rs 18,000 per year to the senior-most woman in every household in Jammu & Kashmir. Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia were welcomed to the party fold by Congress general secretary in-charge of Organisation KC Venugopal, in the presence of party’s Chairman of media and publicity department Pawan Khera and Haryana Congress chief Udai Bhan, among others. Speaking on the occasion, Ms Phogat expressed her gratitude for her induction into the Congress. They also fought against Agniveer (scheme).” Centre approves shorter, more effective treatment regimen for drug-resistant TB STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE NEW DELHI, 6 SEPTEMBER The Centre has approved the introduction of the BPaLM regimen for more effective and a quicker treatment option for drug-resistant TB in the country. In a statement, the Union Health Ministry on Friday said: “Under (the) vision of the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) to rid the country of TB by 2025, five years ahead of the global target for eliminating the disease under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Union Ministry of Health has approved introduction of the BPaLM regimen ~ a novel treatment for Multi-Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) under its National TB Elimination Program(me) (NTEP) as a highly effective and shorter treatment option.” This regimen includes a new anti-TB drug namely Pretomanid in combination with Bedaquiline and Linezolid (with/without Moxifloxacin). Pretomanid has earlier been approved and licensed for use in India by Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), it said. “The BPaLM regimen, which consists of a fourdrug combination ~ Bedaquiline, Pretomanid, Linezolid and Moxifloxacin, has been proven to be safe, more effective and a quicker treatment option than the previous MDR-TB treatment procedure. While traditional MDR-TB treatments can last up to 20 months with severe side effects, BPaLM regimen can cure the drugresistant TB in just six months with high treatment success rate,” the Health Ministry said. India’s 75,000 drug-resistant TB patients will now be able to avail benefit of this shorter regimen. With the other advantages, there will be an overall saving in cost, it said. This move by the government of India is expected to significantly boost the country’s progress to achieve its national goal of ending TB, it said.
