Air India said the incident occurred on Thursday night after an intruder entered her room. As per reports, the crew member was sleeping when the intruder attacked her. The victim suffered bruises as she tried to escape the intruder. The accused is said to be a Nigerian citizen and has been arrested. T he Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee (PGT) doctor in Kolkata’s state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and posted the matter for hearing on Tuesday, 20 August. The matter will be heard by a Bench comprising Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra. Kolkata witnessed a huge uproar of protest that has spread to other parts of the country after the body of the PGT doctor was found in the seminar room of RG Kar Hospital on 9 August, in circumstances indicating she was brutally raped and murdered. Calcutta High Court, dissatisfied with the probe being conducted by the state police, handed over the investigation into the crime to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). On 16 August, two advocates, Ujjawal Gaur and Rohit Pandey, seeking the urgent intervention of the top court given the gravity of the incident, wrote to Chief Justice Chandrachud urging him to take suo mo- tu cognisance of the case. “The nation looks to the judiciary as the ultimate guardian of justice, the last refuge for those whose cries have been silenced by brutality. The victim in this case, a young doctor whose life was dedicated to serving others, deserves nothing less than the full measure of justice that our legal system can provide. Her death must not be in vain, it must galvanize us to act, to ensure that no other woman suffers such a fate,” the lawyers wrote. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 14 August 2024 in view of its prevalence and spread across many parts of Africa. The high-level PMO meeting was briefed that as of now, there is no reported case of Mpox in the country. As per the present assessment, the risk of a large outbreak with sustained transmission is low. Dr Mishra directed that surveillance be enhanced and effective measures be taken for prompt detection of cases. He directed that the testing laboratories network should be geared up for early diagnosis. 188 Pak Hindus get Indian citizenship in Gujarat STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE NEW DELHI, 18 AUGUST Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Sunday distributed citizenship certificates to 188 refugees under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Ahmedabad. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was present. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Shah said the CAA is not just to give citizenship to millions of people settled in the country, but to give justice and rights to millions of refugees. He said that due to the appeasement policy of the Congress governments, the people who took refuge in the country from 1947 to 2014 did not get justice. These people had to endure abuse not only in India’s neighbouring countries but also here. Mr Shah said that these people yearned for justice for three generations but due to the appeasement policy of the Opposition, they did not get justice. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given justice to these lakhs of people. The Home Minister said that at the time of Independence, India was divided on the basis of religion and there were severe riots. The Congress government then had promised that people from Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Jain and Christian communities coming from neighbouring countries would be given citizenship, but the promise was not kept. (PHOTO: BISWAJIT GHOSHAL) Coast Guard DG Rakesh Pal dead AGENCIES CHENNAI, 18 AUGUST The Director General of Indian Coast Guard (ICG), Rakesh Pal, died of a massive cardiac arrest here on Sunday. Sources in the ICG told IANS that he was in INS Adyar in preparation for the visit of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh when he complained of chest pain. Rakesh Pal was serving as the 25th Director General of the Coast Guard. He was rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai on Sunday afternoon. However, the Coast Guard DG passed away at around 7 p.m. without responding to treatment, sources said. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin paid their last respects to Rakesh Pal at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. Mr Singh also posted on microblogging platform X: “Deeply saddened at the untimely demise of Shri Rakesh Pal, DG, Indian Coast Guard in Chennai today. He was an able and committed officer under whose leadership ICG was making big strides in strengthening India’s maritime security. My heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family.”
