Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was present. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Shah said the CAA is not just to give citizenship to millions of people settled in the country, but to give justice and rights to millions of refugees. He said that due to the appeasement policy of the Congress governments, the people who took refuge in the country from 1947 to 2014 did not get justice. These people had to endure abuse not only in India’s neighbouring countries but also here. He said that the journey from 1947 to 2019 and 2019 to 2024 will always be remembered by the history of this country. He asked why can’t those from neighbouring countries be given citizenship. On one hand, the Opposition gave citizenship to crores of people illegally, although they had infiltrated into India from across the border, Mr Shah said. On the other hand, those who had followed the law were told that there is no legal provision for their citizenship. The Home Minister said that the law is for the people and not people for the law. Late Saturday night, Air India stated the "unlawful incident of intrusion" occurred at a London hotel. The airline said it was providing not only immediate assistance "but also professional counselling to help her." The incident took place on Thursday night after an intruder entered her room. The accused is said to be a Nigerian citizen and has been arrested, according to some reports. Sources said the incident happened at a hotel in Heathrow, London, and the crew had on many occasions raised the issue of inadequate safety at the hotel where the crew had been stalked. He also virtually launched the Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre, located at the Chennai Port premises, and the Coast Guard Air Enclave in Puducherry. The buildings have been established to ensure robust maritime security and provide efficient responses to emergencies, reinforcing the country's commitment to maritime safety and environmental protection. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre aims to significantly enhance the coordination and effectiveness of maritime rescue operations for mariners & fishermen in distress at sea. It underscores the government’s resolve to protect lives and ensure a swift response in critical situations. The Centre is installed with latest equipment for distress monitoring through terrestrial & satellite systems and equipped with advanced communication systems for real-time management of alerts by highlytrained personnel of ICG specialising in Search & Rescue procedures, with the rescue aircraft, ships and other facilities. The Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre is the first-of-its-kind facility for coordinating response against marine pollution, particularly oil and chemical pollution, in waters adjoining the coastal states in the Indian Ocean Region. The setting-up of this centre was spearheaded by Coast Guard Regional Headquarters East at its premises within Chennai Port. It has an Emergency Response Centre which will be manned 24x7 by ICG personnel to monitor marine oil pollution incidents. The Centre will also impart training in Pollution response techniques to various organisations such as Ports, Oil Handling agencies, Government organisations and private participants. It will also train personnel from friendly countries in combating oil pollution at sea. The practical training will involve actual deployment of various oil handling equipment for maximum exposure to real time oil spill scenarios. The Union Home Ministry has asked all state police forces to submit situation reports every two hours on the ongoing protests by medical professionals and others against the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. In a communication to the state police forces, the home ministry said that the law and order situation of all states should be monitored in view of the protests. “Regarding two hourly law and order situation reports. The competent authority has desired to monitor the law and order situation no other woman suffers such a fate,” the lawyers wrote in their letter to the CJI. (PHOTO: SUBRATA DUTTA) Coast Guard DG Rakesh Pal dies AGENCIES CHENNAI, 18 AUGUST The Director General of Indian Coast Guard (ICG), Rakesh Pal,has died of a massive cardiac arrest here on Sunday. Sources in the ICG told IANS that he was in INS Adyar in preparation for the visit of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh when he complained of chest pain. Rakesh Pal was serving as the 25th Director General of the Coast Guard. He was immediately rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai on Sunday afternoon.However, the Coast Guard DG passed away at around 7 p.m. without responding to treatment, sources said. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin paid their last respects to Rakesh Pal at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. Mr Singh also posted on X: "Deeply saddened at the untimely demise of Shri Rakesh Pal, DG, Indian Coast Guard in Chennai today. He was an able and committed officer under whose leadership ICG was making big strides in strengthening India’s maritime security. My heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family."
