The Union Sports Minister further informed the House that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha to take "necessary action" in this issue. Making a statement in the Lok Sabha, Mandaviya said, "Today her (Vinesh Phogat) weight was found 50 kg 100 grams and she was disqualified. The Indian Olympic Association has lodged a strong protest with the United World Wrestling (UWW). IOA President PT Usha is in Paris, the Prime Minister spoke to her and asked her to take necessary action." He informed the House that the Centre has provided every facility to Vinesh Phogat including personal staff. The Opposition, however, was dissatisfied with Mandaviya's statement and walked out from the Lok Sabha. Vinesh missed the weight cut by a little over 100 grams during the weighin, leading to her disqualification. “It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the women’s wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time,” a statement from the Indian contingent read. “The Indian team requests you to respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand,” it further read. This is not the first instance when Vinesh has encountered problems in meeting the weight requirements for the 50 kg category, a division lower than her usual 53kg class. Earlier, during the Olympic qualifiers, the grappler faced a similar challenge where she barely managed to qualify. According to reliable sources in the Indian contingent, the grappler in a desperate attempt to shed the extra weight, spent the entire night engaging in various activities, such as jogging, skipping and cycling. Despite spending a sleepless night, and the relentless efforts, Vinesh failed to get rid of the extra weight, and was found to be a few grams over the required limit. The Indian contingent made an earnest appeal for an extension, hoping to provide her with a final opportunity to lose weight. However, their requests were denied by the organisers. As per the competition rules, the disqualification means Phogat will finish last in the 50 kg standings, and return empty-handed from a third straight Olympics. While Phogat successfully made the weight (49.90 kg) for the bouts on Tuesday, the rules state that wrestlers must maintain their body weight within the required limits throughout the entire competition. Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who lost to Vinesh in the semi-final, has been named as the Indian’s replacement for the gold medal bout against USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt. “Vinesh failed the second day's weigh-in. According to Article 11 of the International Wrestling Rules, Vinesh will be replaced by the wrestler who lost against her in the Semifinal. Therefore Yusneylis Guzman Lopez (Cuba) will compete in the final,” said the organisers in an official statement. EC announces bypolls to 12 RS seats in 9 states STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE NEW DELHI, 7 AUGUST The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday announced the schedule for by-election to 12 Rajya Sabha seats in Assam, Bihar, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tripura, Telangana and Odisha. The by-election to 12 seats in Upper House in nine states were necessitated following election of 10 members to the 18th Lok Sabha and two others due to resignation. Among the members who tendered their resignation after their election as a member of the Lower House are Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Jyotiraditya Scindia, former Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb and senior Congress leader KC Venugopal. According to a communiqué issued by the ECI, polling for these 12 Rajya Sabha seats in nine states will be held on 3 September. The government on Tuesday moved an amendment allowing long-term capital gains taxes on property purchases made before 23 July, 2024, to be calculated under the new 12.5 per cent rate without indexation and the old 20 per cent rate with indexation and allowing taxpayers to choose the more favourable option. “The amendment gives a choice to taxpayer to now they can calculate and see what works better for them.The current amendment ensures that there will be no additional tax burden on people,” the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said. “We heard the people,” she added. “The logic of the budgetary proposal on capital gains is that it has to be simplified and to treat all asset classes equally,” the minister added. Under the amendment, taxpayers can compute tax on assets acquired before 23 July under the old scheme with indexation or the new scheme without indexation and pay the lower tax, Mrs Sitharaman said, adding that amendments in the Budget are brought in even later so that it is representative of common people's aspirations. Under the 12.5 per cent LTCG rate without indexation, taxpayers can pay a lower tax rate of 12.5 per cent on the capital gains from the sale of property without adjusting the purchase price for inflation (indexation). The Lok Sabha later in the day passed the Finance Bill, 2024. Speaker Om Birla declared the Finance Bill passed by a voice-vote, after all non-official amendments were rejected. Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said today that the interim government, headed by Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus, will be sworn in tomorrow.During a press conference this afternoon, General Waker said the interim government is likely to be sworn in at 8:00 p.m. tomorrow. He also said the advisory council may have 15 members. The army chief hoped normalcy would return within three-four days as the situation across the country is improving significantly. The country is facing uncertainty after the resignation and flight of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 5 August in the face of a mass uprising against her and her Awami League government. In the mob violence and rioting that followed, at least 142 people died across the country. Her resignation followed around three weeks of violence that had its origins in the students' demand for reform to the quota system in public service jobs. Between 16 July and today, over 400 people, as far as can be confirmed, have been killed in violent clashes. STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE NEW DELHI, 7 AUGUST The Indian High Commission in Dhaka remained functional while non-essential staffers at the mission are voluntarily returning to India on commercial flights along with their families, sources said on Wednesday. “The High Commission is functional and all Indian diplomats continue to remain in Dhaka,” sources said, adding the return of nonessential staff has taken place on a voluntary basis. This comes two days after Sheikh Hasina resigned as Bangladesh's prime minister and fled to India amid nationwide protests against her government. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka has already issued an advisory asking the Indian community and students to avoid local travel and minimise their movement outside their living premises. Besides the high commission, India has assistant high commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet. On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told that the situation in Bangladesh is still evolving and India is in touch with its citizens there to ensure their safety. After visiting the landslidehit areas, the prime minister is expected to visit a few relief camps where over 10,000 people are currently sheltered. However, no official announcement has been made regarding the visit Meanwhile, the toll from the Wayanad landslide disaster on Wednesday rose to 413, with 152 people still missing.Meanwhile, the Wayanad district adminis- tration has published a draft list of those who have been reported missing in the devastating landslides that hit Chooralmala and Kandakkai areas in Kerala’s Wayanad district on 30 July morning. The list includes 138 people who have gone missing since the disaster, including those who were directly affected by the landslides. The list includes one person from Odisha and four persons from Bihar. Dr Swadheen Panda, 32, Hitech hospital and Medical College Pandra, Rasulgarh is the Odisha native included in the list. In a statement, the Union Health Ministry said, "It has come to the notice of National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences that some unscrupulous agents are making false and bogus claims by dint of social media platform.” “The cozeners are claiming to provide NEETPG 2024 questions for the upcoming NEET-PG 2024 Examination in exchange for a considerable amount of money." "It is clarified that NBEMS has already registered a police complaint against such fraudsters and their accomplices for their attempt to befool NEET-PG aspirants in the name of providing questions of NEET-PG 2024 for a considerable sum of money," it said.
