The pilot of the aircraft was rescued alive and is under treatment in hospital. The accident occurred after the Pokhara-bound flight suffered a runway excursion during takeoff, said TIA Spokesperson Subash Jha. Nineteen people, including two crew members, were in the Pokhara-bound flight, with registration number 9NAME, which took off from Kathmandu at 11:11 am. Eyewitnesses say that the plane was taking off from the Southern-end of the runway (Koteshwor side) and suddenly flipped with the wing tip hitting the ground. The aircraft caught fire immediately. It then plunged to a gorge on the eastern side of the runway~between Buddha Air hanger and the radar station. Nepal Police said Captain MR Shakya was rescued from the crash site and has been admitted to the KMC Hospital in Sinamangal for treatment. Most of the passengers were airline staff travelling to Pokhara for aircraft maintenance. Among the eighteen people who lost their lives, three have been identified as members of a family. According to sources, Manuraj Sharma, a technical staff member at Saurya Airlines, his wife Priza Khatiwada who worked as a computer operator at the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, and their son Adhiraj Sharma, were all killed in the accident. Police reported that one of the passengers was a Yemeni citizen. The government has formed a five-member committee to investigate the Saurya Airlines crash. The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered status quo to be maintained at the Shambhu border near Ambala between Haryana and Punjab, where farmers demanding a law to guarantee minimum support price for their agricultural produce have been agitating since 13 February 2024. A bench of the court comprising Justice Surya Kant, Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan said it proposes to constitute an independent committee comprising eminent persons who can reach out to farmers and other stakeholders in order to find viable solutions to their demands that can be fair, just and in the interests of everyone. The bench asked the Punjab and Haryana governments to suggest some names to be included in the proposed expert committee; otherwise the court can find out some suitable persons for the committee. The bench gave a week’s time to both the states to suggest names to be included in the proposed committee. “Let appropriate instructions be taken within a week. Till then let parties maintain status quo at the site to prevent flaring up of the situation at the Shambhu border,” the bench stated in its order. The court also asked Punjab and Haryana to take steps for the removal of barricades in a phased manner at the Shambhu border so that no inconvenience is caused to the public at large. The top court’s order came in the course of the hearing of an appeal by the Haryana government against the 10 July order of Punjab and Haryana High Court by which it had directed it to open the highway and clear the barricading within seven days on experimental basis. A heavily armed Pakistani terrorist was also killed in the gunfight. The soldier was critically injured during exchange of fire with terrorists and later succumbed. Dilawar Khan was injured during indiscriminate firing at the troops by the hiding terrorists, said an official. This is the second casualty of a soldier in J&K in the past 24 hours. Lance Naik, Subhash Chander, died yesterday while fighting infiltrating terrorists in the Poonch district of Jammu. India has been ranked at the 82nd spot on a global passport index, allowing Indians visa-free entry to 58 countries, including popular destinations like Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. According to the latest ranking by the UK-based Henley Passport Index, India's passport now ranks at an improved 82nd spot. The ranking is based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The Henley Passport Index is a global ranking of countries according to the travel freedom allowed by those countries' ordinary passports for their citizens. Singapore was ranked the leader on the passport index, reclaiming its title as the world’s most powerful passport in the latest ranking. “The city-state also sets a new record score, with its citizens now enjoying access to 195 travel destinations out of 227 around the world visa-free. France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Spain drop to joint-2nd place, each with visa-free access to 192 destinations,” according to the Index. An unprecedented sevennation cohort, each with access to 191 destinations without a prior visa ~ Austria, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, South Korea, and Sweden ~ now sits in 3rd place on the ranking. The UK was in fourth place along with Belgium, Denmark, New Zealand, Norway and Switzerland, despite its visa-free destination score falling to 190. “The US, on the other hand, continues its now decade-long slide down the index, dropping down to 8th spot, with access to just 186 destinations visa-free,” said the Index. According to IATA, airlines will connect nearly 5 billion people over 22,000 routes on 39 million flights in 2024, and the air cargo transported will reach 62 million tonnes, facilitating an $8.3 trillion in trade. “Our industry expects to record revenues of almost $1 trillion this year. Expenses, however, will also be at a record high of $936 billion. Net profit will be $30.5 billion,” said IATA Director General, Willie Walsh. CMYK The first of two Advanced Frigates, under construction by the Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) for the Indian Navy, was launched last evening at GSL, Goa. In keeping with maritime tradition, the ship was launched by Mrs Rita Sreedharan to the invocation from Atharva Veda, in the presence of Goa Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai. The ship has been named Triput, after the mighty arrow, representing the indomitable spirit of the Indian Navy and its ability to strike far and deep. The contract for building two Triput class Advanced Frigates was signed between the Ministry of Defence, and the Goa Shipyard Limited on 25 January 2019. The ship is Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) launches the first indigenous Advanced P1135.6 Frigate 'Triput' for the Indian Navy, on Tuesday. ANI designed for combat operations against enemy surface ships, submarines and aircraft. The Triput class ships are 124.8 m long and 15.2 m wide, with a draught of 4.5 m. Their displacement is about 3600 tonnes, and the speed of a maximum of 28 knots. The ships are equipped with stealth features, advanced weapons and sensors and platform management systems. The Triput class of ships is a follow-on ships of the Teg and Talwar class ships acquired from Russia. These frigates are being constructed for the first time indigenously by an Indian Shipyard. In line with the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, a large percentage of the equipment fit, including weapons and sensors is of indigenous origin, thereby ensuring that large-scale defence production is executed by Indian manufacturing units, generating employment and capability enhancement within the country, the Defence Ministry said on Wednesday.
