MC to strictly enforce plastic ban from July1 Tribune News Service Chandigarh, June 29 In a bid to reduce the use of single-use plastic items and promote sustainability, the Municipal Corporation (MC) has decided to impose hefty fines on shopkeepers, traders and citizens found defying the from July 1. Straws, plastic bags and disposable cutlery have long been identified as major contributors to environ- mental degradation, posing a significant threat to the health of the planet. Under the regulations, violators will be slapped hefty fines for their first offence. Repeat offenders will face harsher penalties, including temporary or permanent closure of their businesses. To ensure compliance, the MC has deployed a team of inspectors who will carry out regular checks at Apni Mandi, grocery stores and other businesses that use or sell single-use plastic items. The MC had earlier approached the ministry for the environmental clearance for the plant. It has now been decided to hold a public hearing for the project — “Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) Facility” — at 11 am on July 30 at the Community Centre, Sector 38 (West). According to the Municipal Corporation, the Deputy Commissioner will preside over the public hearing. The Municipal Commissioner will also be present there to seek residents’ views. “Public views will be taken and sent to the ministry. The plant is to be construct- ed on a “design, finance, own, operate and transfer” basis. As per the technology recommended by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), bio CNG and refuse-derived fuel (RDF) will be produced in the processing of wet and dry waste, respectively. The RDF will be supplied to cement plants. In June 2020, the MC had taken over the waste plant from Jaypee Group as the company had failed to process the whole garbage, leading to the piling up of trash. At present, the city’s garbage is managed at a temporary facility. Rain eludes city, IMD blames it on winds Chandigarh: An immigration consultant has been booked for duping a Haryana resident of Rs 7.60 lakh. According to the police, Deep Babu of Kaithal alleged that he paid the money to the owner of Sapphire Immigration, Sector 44, for sending his son abroad. In one such case, a resident of Sector 27 ended up losing Rs 17.20 lakh. The police said Rattan Kumar Jain (59) was deceived by a fraudster, who posed as his uncle, DC Jain, who lives in Canada. The suspect contacted Rattan via the social media and started sending him messages on WhatsApp. After sometime, the fraudster started asking for money. After much persuasion, the victim transferred Rs 17.20 lakh in five transactions. He later came to know that he was duped. On June 22, the Land Acquisition Department had issued a notice to the furniture market, directing the shopkeepers to demolish their shops and vacate government land within a week. In the notice served on the shopkeepers, the depart- ment has clarified that the land was acquired by the Chandigarh Administration in 2002 and forms part of Badheri village. Despite efforts by the shopkeepers to seek stay order from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, all petitions were disposed of in September 2023. The court’s decision upheld the administration’s right to reclaim the land, having already compensated the original landowners. Two kidnappers in custody of the Chandigarh police. Two kidnappers of pvt firm employee held Chandigarh, June 29 A day after a supervisor from a private company was kidnapped in Sector 53, the UT police arrested Kuldeep (26) and Ajay (28), both residents of Jhampur village, Mohali. They had kidnapped the supervisor from Spring Park in Sector 53. The suspects, who were in an inebriated condition, had attacked the victim with a brick, blindfolded him, and kidnapped him on a motorcycle. They had taken him to a forest area and again assaulted him with a bottle. They demanded a ransom of Rs 50,000. The supervisor called up his site manager, Nitin, who transferred the money to the victim via UPI. After receiving the payment, the kidnappers snatched his phone and fled the spot. The police had registered a case under Sections 364, 365, 384, 379-B and 34 of the IPC at the Sector 36 police station. Both kidnappers told the police that they went to a shopkeeper and paid him Rs 15,000 via UPI and got cash in return. The police have recovered the stolen phone, Rs 15,000 and the motorcycle used in the crime.
