He took Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav to the cleaners before de Kock (39 off 31 balls) tried to do an encore against Arshdeep Singh, but perished, holing out to Kuldeep at the fine leg fence. The Chief Justice of India (CJI), DY Chandrachud, on Saturday, said the trend of equating judges with God is dangerous since the task of judges is to serve public interest. “Too very often, we are addressed as Honour or as Lordship or as Ladyship. There is a very grave danger when people say that the court is a temple of justice. There is a grave danger that we perceive ourselves as the deities in those temples,” the CJI said while addressing the Regional Conference of the National Judicial Academy in Kolkata. The CJI said that he feels reticent when he is told that the court is the temple of justice because the temple postulates that the judges are in the position of a deity. “I would rather recast the role of the judge as a server of the people. And when you regard yourselves as people who are there to serve others, then you bring in the notion of compassion, of empathy, of judging but not being judgmental about others,” the CJI said. AGENCIES The United Nations has warned that only 17 per cent of its 169 targets to improve life for the world’s more than 7 billion people are on track to be reached by the 2030 deadline. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres launched the annual report saying, “It shows the world is getting a failing grade.” World leaders adopted the 17 wide-ranging development goals from ending global poverty to achieving gender equality in 2015, and set 169 specific targets to be reached by the end of the decade. According to the report, nearly half the targets show minimal or moderate progress and over one-third are stalled or regressing ~ with just 17 per cent are on track to be achieved. “The takeaway is simple,” Mr Guterres said. “Our failure to secure peace, to confront climate change, and to boost international finance is undermining development.” The report also cited the lingering effects of the pandemic and said an additional 23 million people were pushed into extreme poverty and over 100 million more were suffering from hunger in 2022 compared to 2019. “In a world of unprece- dented wealth, knowledge and technologies, the denial of basic needs for so many is outrageous and unacceptable,” Mr Guterres said. On the downside, the UN reported that for the first time this century, per-capita GDP growth in half of the world’s most vulnerable nations is slower than that of advanced economies, threatening improvements in equality. And in 2022, it said, nearly 60% of countries faced moderate to abnormally high food prices. The goal of quality education is far offtrack. Only 58% of students worldwide achieved minimum proficiency in reading by the end of primary school, and “recent assessments reveal a significant decline in math and reading scores in many countries,” the report said. nised batter in David Miller. But it was simply not their day in the end. Earlier, India’s talismanic right-hander Virat Kohli came up with a calculative half century to propel India to a competitive 176 for 7. Kohli, who had come to the final with just 75 runs from seven innings, finally got into his groove when it mattered the most for the team. Despite India losing Rohit Sharma for a 5-ball 9, and then Rishabh Pant for a duck in the same over, it hardly mattered to Kohli. Suryakumar Yadav (3) also perished cheaply. Axar Patel, who was promoted up the order after the mini collapse saw India struggling at 34 for 3 inside the powerplay, grabbed the opportunity with both hands, stitching together a 72-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Kohli. With India comfortably getting past the three-figure mark, and the two batters set to change gears, Axar departed to a mix-up after slamming a 31-ball 47, laced with a boundary and four massive sixes. Shivam Dube continued from where Axar left off and kept swinging at 150+ strike rate, to ensure the Indian innings never stalled.
