"I said it before that the Shehzada (prince) will be defeated in Wayanad and soon after the elections at Wayanad will be over, he will go in search of a second seat. His followers were claiming that he will fight from Amethi. But it seems that he is scared of Amethi too. So now the 'prince' is trying to find an escape route from Rae Bareli," PM Modi said while addressing a rally at Burdwan in West Bengal. "I had already said in the Parliament that their (Congress) biggest leader will not dare to fight elections and she will run away,” he said, hinting at Sonia Gandhi, without naming her. “She ran away to Rajasthan and came to the Rajya Sabha. Today, I am also telling them not to be scared," he added. The grand old party of the country has fielded candidates in less than 300 seats so far this year. Mr Modi, speaking at another rally in Tehatta in Krishnagar parliamentary constituency, said the Congress may not even get 50 seats, while he gave the Trinamul Congress no more than 15 seats. “Trinamul Congress will not be able to win more than 15 seats. Congress, despite all its efforts, might not be able to even cross the halfcentury mark. Everyone knows the condition of the Left parties even in West Bengal now. So in such a situation, the BJP-NDA is the only force that will be able to form a government after the elections,” Mr Modi NEW DELHI, 3 MAY said. The Prime Minister further claimed that the Trinamul Congress-ruled West Bengal government wants to make Hindus secondclass citizens in the state. He said that the TMC has problems with the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya and Ram Navami processions in Bengal. “A TMC MLA said yesterday that they will throw the Hindus into Bhagirathi (river). What kind of politics is this? Why have Hindus become second-class citizens in Bengal? In Sandeshkhali, our Dalit sisters faced atrocities but TMC tried to shield the accused Sheikh Shahjahan. The whole country was shaken to the core and there was an outcry for action but the TMC kept protecting the culprit. Was it just because the culprit's name was Sheikh Shahjahan?" he asked. He added: “The TMC, Left and Congress do not have a vision for development.” “You know very well what the Left, Congress and TMC can do to a state. Tripura was being ruled by the Leftists. But in the last five years, BJP has changed Tripura. With the Left party gone, the sun of development started rising there.” The Supreme Court on Friday said that it may consider giving interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in view of the ongoing Lok Sabha election and asked the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) to address the court on this count. Rahul files nomination from Rae Bareli, KL Sharma from Amethi STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE RAE BARELI/AMETHI, 3 MAY Ending the suspense, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday filed his nomination from Rae Bareli, while party loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma filed his papers from Amethi in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls. Both the leaders filed their papers on the last day of filing nominations for the polls. Taking forward the legacy of his grandmother Indira Gandhi and mother Sonia Gandhi, Rahul will face BJP candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh from Rae Bareli on 20 May in the fifth phase of the general election. Rahul is also contesting from Wayanad in Kerala, the seat he currently represents in the Lower House of Parliament. Polling in Wayanad was held in the second phase on 26 April. The leaders got a rousing welcome from party workers who raised slogans of "Rahul Gandhi Zindabad' and 'Congress Zindabad". Priyanka, who accompanied her party candidates in Amethi and Rae Bareli, would be leading the campaign in both constituencies from 6 May. Uttar Pradesh minister Dinesh Pratap Singh will take on Rahul Gandhi from Rae Bareli. He also filed his nomination on Friday. Singh will face the Gandhi family for the second consecutive time in the high profile seat. In 2019, the former Congress leader had contested the election against Sonia, but lost by 1.64 lakh votes. With his nomination from the Rae Bareli seat on Friday, Rahul represents the third generation of the NehruGandhi family to contest elections here. Firoz Gandhi, Rahul’s grandfather, first contested the Lok Sabha elections in 1952 from Rae Bareli and won. He won the election in 1958 too. After his death, Indira Gandhi started her political innings by filing her nomination from this seat in the 1967 elections. In 2004, Indira Gandhi's daughter-in-law Sonia Gandhi was elected from the constituency and went on to win four more times. Before being elected to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan, Sonia Gandhi had written an emotional letter to the people of Rae Bareli that went viral on social media. Since then, speculation had been rife that someone from the Gandhi family will contest the elections from Rae Bareli. In the Amethi seat, it is being said that KL Sharma has received a reward for his loyalty from the Gandhi family. He is originally from Ludhiana, Punjab. In 1983, Rajiv Gandhi brought him to Amethi for the first time. Since then he stayed here. Even when the Gandhi family stopped contesting elections from here after the death of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, Sharma continued working for the Congress Party. After Sonia Gandhi was elected MP from Rae Bareli, he worked as her representative. With Sonia Gandhi not contesting the elections, Kishori was considered a contender from Rae Bareli, but the party has made him a candidate from Amethi instead of Rae Bareli.
