Among other districts, Ludhiana logged recoveries amounting to Rs 26.16 crore, Gurdaspur Rs 10.64 crore, Kapurthala Rs 6.39 crore, Hoshiarpur Rs 4.99 crore, Nawanshahr Rs 1.15 crore, Ropar Rs 1.69 crore, Mohali Rs 4.63 crore, Fatehgarh Sahib Rs 63.31 lakh, Moga Rs 2.83 crore, Muktsar Rs 1.25 crore, Faridkot Rs 98.35 lakh, Bathinda Rs 4.2 crore, Mansa Rs 1.37 crore, Sangrur Rs 11.441 crore, Barnala Rs 7.33 crore, Patiala Rs 7.28 crore, Pathankot Rs 21.4 crore, and Malerkotla district seized cash and other material amounting to Rs 2.07 lakh during the past 45 days. “In an endeavour to preserve the sanctity of the electoral process, enforcement continued on page 2 INDIA VOTES 2024 Nitin Jain Tribune News Service Ludhiana, May 2 Seizures of illegal and prohibited material during the ongoing model code of conduct (MCC) for the General Election to the 18th Lok Sabha have crossed Rs 26 crore in Ludhiana district, official figures have revealed. The recoveries were made since March 16 when the Election Commission of India (ECI) had imposed the MCC while announcing the election schedule in the country. The seizures made in Ludhiana were sixth highest in the state, where the recoveries worth a whopping Rs 487 crore have been made during the 45 days of the poll code so far. The recoveries included unaccounted cash, liquor, drugs, narcotics, precious metals, freebies, and other items, which were illegal and prohibited under the MCC guidelines. On Thursday, a total of 14 notices were issued to three political parties for ‘violating’ the poll code. The Congress received 12 notices and one each was issued to the BJP and AAP . The Ludhiana Central Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) issued nine notices to the Congress, with one additional notice issued by the Ludhiana West ARO. These were prompted by the display of banners and posters supporting the party candidate, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, on a flyover near Samrala Chowk and other locations. The arrangement of stages without proper permissions was also noted. An official assigned to election duties in the Ludhiana Central constituency reported that the nine notices to the Congress encompassed violations such as erecting stages and displaying posters with- Banners of Cong leaders displayed on a flyover in Ludhiana. out permission in different locations near Samrala Chowk and Shingar Cinema Road. Meanwhile, the Ludhiana West ARO served a notice to the Congress for organising a meeting without permission opposite a commercial mall on Ferozepur Road in Ludhiana. Besides, two more notices were issued to the Congress. In Ludhiana East, one notice has been issued to AAP for alleged defacement. Additionally, unauthorised posters of BJP candidate Ravneet Bittu were found displayed on pillars of Elevated Road on Ferozepur Road here. In response, the Ludhiana West ARO issued a notice to the BJP for exhibiting the posters without permission. Earlier, similar violations of unauthorised posters were found in areas of Ludhiana East, according to an official. Thereafter, action was started to remove them. An official said 14 notices were issued today. Of these, 12 were issued to the Congress and one each to the BJP and AAP . Several posters and flags were allegedly displayed at different locations during the AAP’s roadshow in areas of the Sahnewal constituency. But it was unclear whether these were approved or not. ARO, Sahnewal, Vikas Hira, said he had not received any complaint regarding violations of the poll code during the AAP’s roadshow. He said their teams were assessing videos of the roadshow. If any violation is observed, they will issue suo moto notices. Man nabbed for raping 7-yr-old Tribune News Service Ludhiana, May 2 The Tibba police arrested a man on the charge of raping a seven-year-old girl. The suspect, identified as Deepak of Gopal Nagar, was arrested by the police. A case under Section 4 of the POCSO Act and 376 of the IPC was registered against him. The complainant told the police that on April 30 when her daughter was alone at home, the suspect took her to the bathroom and raped her. When she reached home, she was shocked to see that her daughter was bleeding from her private part and on being asked about the cause, her daughter revealed that the man had sexually assaulted her. The complainant said she lodged a police complaint and after investigation, the police registered a case on Wednesday. Investigating officer ASI Jiwan Singh said the suspect was arrested by the police yesterday. He used to work as a part-time electrician in the Tibba area. 2 major fire incidents keep firemen on toes Ludhiana, May 2 Two major fire incidents occurred in the city on Thursday afternoon kept the firemen on their toes. The fire personnel struggled for hours to douse the flames. As per information, one of the incidents occurred in a paper mill in Gaunspur village on the Hambran road while the other took place at another paper factory in Ladhowal. In the first incident at a paper mill in Gaunspur on Thursday, the factory was functional when the fire broke out. The fire started from heaps of straw kept on the premises of the unit A fireman douses the flames at a paper mill at Ladhowal on Thursday. and later, it engulfed the huge stock of paper. Fortunately, it could not reach the place where the machinery was kept. Reason of fire was yet to be known. In the second incident, plenty of stubble kept inside the paper mill in Ladhowal caught fire, fortunately, the unit was lying closed from sometime due to which no loss of life was reported in the incident. Sources said heaps of stubble was kept in the open on the factory premises while the machinery was kept in the shed due to which the machinery worth lakhs did not face any damages from the blaze. Fire officials said the exact cause of fire was yet to be known but the factory owner had claimed that farm fire could be the possible cause behind the incident. They, however, said there was no such farm fire around the factory and the exact cause would be investigated. They said there were no fire safety arrangements in the factory due to which such incidents could not be controlled at the initial stage. — TNS c m y b Woman among 2 held with heroin, drug money Ludhiana, May 2 The Ludhiana police yesterday arrested two persons, including a woman, and seized 360 gm of heroin and Rs 9,500 drug money from them. They have been identified as Dharamjit Kumar of Peeru Banda mohalla, and Amandeep Kaur of Goraya. ASI Jaswinder Singh said when he, along with the police team, was patrolling near Ladhowal, they saw the couple walking towards the police naka. On seeing the police, they tried to flee but the police caught them. He said 360 gm of heroin and Rs 9,500 drug money were seized and they were held. A case had been registered. — TNS Two killed in boiler mishap at Jaspal Bangar rubber factory Our Correspondent Sahnewal, May 2 Two factory workers were reportedly killed in a boiler when gates of a boiler opened accidentally at a rubber factory in Jaspal Bangar here on Wednesday night. The bodies of the victims have been taken into custody by the Sahnewal police. No case was registered till the filing of the report. The deceased have been identified as Jagdish Sharma (40) and Kundan Kumar (22), both residents of Bihar, at present residing in New Ram Nagar. Both of them were working at a rubber factory near Jaspal Bangar. They were working in a night shift yesterday when the gates of the boiler opened due to excess heat, leaving the two badly injured. While Jagdish was declared brought dead at SPS Hospital, Kundan succumbed to his injuries early this morning. Raj Kumar, son of Jagdish Sharma, told this correspondent that his father had been working in the factory for the past five years. “On Wednesday night, I was informed by a local woman that my father had been seriously injured in a mishap at the factory. As I reached the scene, I found my father in a critical condition. He was later declared brought dead by a hospital. We are four siblings. We have been left orphaned by the death of our father,” the wailing son said. Chowki in-charge Kanganwal Jasvir Singh said the police rushed to the scene after getting information. “The bodies have been taken into custody. We are waiting for their kin to record statements and register the case accordingly,” he said. Man dies as truck hits combine harvester Mandi Ahmedgarh, May 2 The driver of a combine harvester died after a truck coming from the rear hit his vehicle at Dehlon Bypass on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla road. The deceased was identified as Sahilpreet Singh of Fatehgarh Sahib. The driver of the truck, who fled the scene, is yet to be identified. According to information received from the Dehlon police, when Sahilpreet was going on his combine harvester from Ludhiana to The vehicles that met with a mishap on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla road. Malerkotla, a truck hit his vehicle from the rear when he was turning towards the Dehlon bypass. The collision was so powerful that the harvester driver fell on the road. Profusely bleeding, the victim was shifted to the Civil Hospital, Dehlon, by passers-by. Finding his condition critical, doctors at the hospital referred him to the Civil Hospital, Ludhiana, where he succumbed to his injuries. The police have initiated a probe into the sequence of events leading to the man’s death after seizing both vehicles. Further action would be taken after receiving a complaint by kin of the deceased. — OC
