Addressing a public meeting today at Harishchandrapur in Malda (Uttar) Parliamentary Constituency, she said: “Modi should not come to power in Delhi. My dream is to drive Modi out of Delhi. Let’s change in Delhi. I will lead the INDIA alliance. Bengal will show the right direction.” Asking to vote for her party candidate Prasun Banerjee, who is contesting from the Malda (Uttar) Lok Sabha seat, Mamata Banerjee said: “The people of Malda extended huge support to Trinamul Congress in 2021. As a result, we stopped the BJP from coming to power in Bengal. But TMC couldn’t win a single seat among the two from Malda in the LS polls. Please give us Lok Sabha seats from Malda so that we can take on the BJP .” She also urged the people to cast their vote only for Min. 21 % Max: 43.0°C (+7.4) Min: 29.7°C (+3.5) SUN RISES SUN SETS 05:5 hrs 18:3 hrs MOON RISES MOON SETS ------ hrs 10:0 hrs Full Moon on 08 May THUMBNAILS Kolkata records hottest day in 70 years: The last day of April became not only the hottest day of the season but also of seven decades when the seemingly unstoppable mercury reached a new high on Tuesday. Kolkata felt scorched on Tuesday as the maximum day temperature in the city touched 43 degrees Celsius after 70 years. After registering a record temperature in 44 years last Thursday, Kolkata witnessed yet another hot and humid day (Pg3) today after 70 years. the Trinamul Congress. “Not a single vote for Congress here. We don’t have any relations with the Congress in Bengal. The Congress is contesting elections in association with the CPIM. Congress leaders, even the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, did not fight for Bengal when the Central Government stopped releasing funds meant for 100 days of work and other schemes like AwasYojana,” she said. Miss Banerjee today also came down heavily on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who criticised the TMC-led West Bengal government on the issue of the Central Government’s fund during his speech at Memari in East Bardhaman. “I will have to answer Amit Shah. Amit Shah today claimed that the Centre had given Rs 2.39 lakh crore of funds to Bengal, but the state government has not utilised the funds. I can challenge you. CAG reports show that Bengal has given all utilisation certificates,” Miss Banerjee said, claiming, “At least 32 departments of your party-led government failed to give utilisation certificates of Rs 72,000 crore funds.” “We are not at your mercy. We are at people’s mercy in Bengal. There is no need to beg for funds from the Centre for a 100day job.We have introduced Karmashree to provide a 50-day job for the people of Bengal. Eleven lakh enrolled beneficiaries for Banglar Bari will be getting CMYK Rs 1.2 lakh from December this year in two instalments,” she said, adding, “BJP will not be able to stop Lakshmi Bhandar. You will be getting monthly financial assistance regularly. Beneficiaries, who will turn 60 years old, will be getting it as an old age allowance automatically under the Lakshmi Bhandar-II scheme.” Criticising the policies of the Narendra Modi government regarding the introduction of CAA, NRC and UCC, CM Banerjee stated, “Modi’s guarantee implies selling the country, undermining and selling the Constitution, terminating teachers’ service, advocating for CAA, NRC and UCC, and religious commodification. You can never apply for citizenship. If you do, the BJP will drive you out of the country. I will never allow them to execute it. We will never bow down before them.” Addressing the public meeting in Malda, Miss Banerjee asked PM Modi, about his role in generating 2 crore jobs and taking action against the price rise of essential commodities and lifesaving drugs. SC asks ED to explain ‘timing’ of CM Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest NEW DELHI, 30 APRIL TRIDIB BAPARNASH NEW DELHI, 30 APRIL Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson were eventually entrusted with the wicketkeeping duties as the BCCI on Tuesday unveiled the 15member squad for the ICC T20 World Cup, starting June 1 in the US and theWest Indies. As expected, the squad will be led by Rohit Sharma, and has Hardik Pandya as vice-captain. This will also mark the return of Pant to international cricket for the first time since a near-fatal accident in December 2022 that kept him on the sidelines for more than a year. The southpaw has used the ongoing IPL 2024 as a perfect platform to prove his fitness, and has so far amassed 398 runs in 11 innings for the Delhi Capitals at a strike rate of 158.56. Over the course of the season, he has also allayed any doubts there may have been over his wicketkeeping. While Pant could well be India’s firstchoice keeping option, Samson’s performances in the ongoing IPL made him an automatic choice for the back-up keeper’s slot. This is the first time the Kerala stumper has made it to the World Cup squad, after missing out to Dinesh Karthik in 2022. Like Pant, Samson has been in prolific form as captain of table-toppers Rajasthan Royals. He has led the franchise from the front, scoring 385 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 161.08. Meanwhile, legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal has also found his way back into the squad on the basis of his impressive form in the ongoing Indian Premier League. Chahal, who wasn’t a part of India’s recent T20 international squads for the series in South Africa and at home against Afghanistan, (Turn to Pg12) Stating that liberty is exceedingly important and cannot be denied, the Supreme Court on Tuesday questioned the Directorate of Enforcement on the timing of arresting Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal just before the general election. “Liberty is very exceedingly important; you can't deny that. The last question is with regard to the timing of the arrest, which they (Kejriwal’s counsel) have pointed out, the timing of the arrest, soon before the general elections”, the top court asked the Directorate of Enforcement to respond to during its submissions on Friday(3 May). The top court’s question to ED on the timing of the arrest of the CM is one of the five questions that a bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta framed for the ED to answer after the two-hour long hearing in which senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi appealing for Kejriwal took the bench through various statements including that of accused-turnedapprover Sarath Chandra Reddy and the provisions of the PML and the Code of Criminal Procedure to highlight the flaws in the entire action of the central agency.
