Once the norms are devised, companies deploying AI technologieswould be rated on various parameters like the time taken to restore the system in the event of any hacking, malware or breakdown. Official sources said initially firms might be asked to selfcertify their systems and provide ratings. A standardised set of norms is required since AI technology is gradually being used in almost all sectors that have consumer interface and there is always a dangerof systems getting hacked and providing erroneous results, causing harm to users. For instance, driverless cars depend on real-time decisionmaking like identifying traffic signals, when to stop, when to start, etc. Similarly, automated car parkings are heavily dependent on AI connectivity. Several systems connected to telecom networks,if hacked, can throw all operations out of gear.In such scenarios, there is a need for uniform standards to assess the time taken for recovery and arrangements needed in the interim. Luxury car sales in top gear in 2023; this year expected to be even better VIKRAM CHAUDHARY New Delhi, January 20 LUXURY CAR MANUFACTURERS reported one of their best sales in 2023 at 47,000 units, and expect to surpass the 50,000-units mark in the current calendaryear. These carmakers form 1% of the luxury market. Even in this 1%, sales are rising. Of these carmakers, only Lamborghini has official presence in India (others operate via dealerships), and in 2023 it sold a record 103 cars. Although 103 seems a small number, Sharad Agarwal, head of Lamborghini India, told FE that the average ex-showroom price of a Lamborghini in India is a little over `4 crore.“But most buyers opt for customisation that can run into `1 crore or more per car. Buyers want to make a Lamborghini their ‘own’—and love to splurge on customised interiors and exteriors, according to their taste,” Agarwal said. “That list (of changes to be done on a new car) is sent to the Lamborghini manufacturing plant in Bologna, Italy, and customisation can take months, depending on the changes.” In December 2023, it launched the `8.89 crore Revuelto, which has been sold out in India until 2026. As per analysts, it’s not just numbers, but the value of luxury cars also rose in 2023. While BMW and Audi haven’t shared the average ticket size of their models, market leader Mercedes-Benz said it launched 10 cars in 2023 at an average ticket size of `1.66 crore, ex-showroom. Of these 10,the most expensivewas the AMG G 63 Grand Edition (`4 crore) and the most affordable was the A 200 Limousine (`45.8 lakh). Santosh Iyer, MD & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, told FE that in 2023 almost 30% sales for the German carmaker come from top-end luxury cars priced `1 crore and above, which is more than double the 12% share these cars had in 2018. Madan Sabnavis, chief economist, Bank of Baroda, said there is a clear move towards purchase of premium cars. “We have seen that as soon as one starts working, there is a desire to own a big car. Banks and NBFCs know this, and provide that little nudge by offering easy credit facilities,”he said. Continued on Page 2
