Superintendent of Police (North Goa) Nidhin Valsan said that so far the motive of the crime is not known as the case is in the primary stage of investigation. The accused woman was identified as Suchana Seth (39) from Bengaluru. She was arrested on Monday from Chitradurga district of Karnataka, while she was heading to Bengaluru in a cab. “After reaching Goa she was produced in the local court, who sent her to six days police custody,” police said. Mr Valsan said that the accused woman is native of West Bengal and has been settled in Bengaluru, while she is married to a Keralite. He was only 55 and is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. Amidst the ongoing diplomatic row between India and the Maldives, the tourism industry in the island has strongly condemned derogatory remarks made by its now suspended ministers against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. ANI CCPA discusses draft guidelines for coaching institutes ads MHA seeks report from Bengal govt over attack on ED teams STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE NEW DELHI, 9 JANUARY The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) conducted the first meeting of its Committee for “Prevention and Regulation of Misleading Advertisements in the Coaching Sector” on 8 January and discussed a set of draft guidelines. The chairman of the committee is the secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs and chief commissioner of CCPA, Rohit Kumar Singh. Mr Singh said that protection of consumers’ inter- est is a paramount concern of the CCPA. He highlighted the need for clarity, specifically in addressing certain aspects related to advertisements in the coaching sector. He said the CCPA firmly believes in safeguarding the rights of consumers and ensuring no false or misleading advertisement is made of any goods or services which contravenes provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. The guidelines shall be applicable to all coaching institutes whether online or physical and cover all forms of advertisement regardless of form, format or medium. The guidelines prescribe conditions when an advertisement by a coaching institute shall be construed to be a misleading advertisement as defined under the Consumer Protection Act 2019 which inter-alia includes concealing important information related to the course opted by the successful candidates (whether free or paid), duration of course etc. The guidelines provide that coaching institutes shall not make false claims regarding success rates or number of selections and any other practices that may lead to consumer misunderstanding or subvert consumer autonomy and choice. The guidelines prescribe Do’s and Don’ts that need to be observed before coming up with advertisements. These are: Coaching Institute shall mention requisite information with successful candidate photo; Rank secured by successful candidate; Course opted by successful candidate; Duration of course; Whether it is paid or free; Coaching institutes shall not make claim 100 per cent selection or 100 per cent job guaranteed or guaranteed preliminary or mains. The font of disclaimer/Disclosure/Important information in the advertisement shall be the same as that used in the claim/advertisement. The placement of such information shall be at a prominent and visible place in the advertisement. AGENCIES NEW DELHI , 9 JANUARY The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sought a detailed report from the West Bengal government over attacks on the Enforcement Directorate (ED) team in the state on January 5, sources said on Tuesday. The ED team was attacked in West Bengal's Sandeskh Khali after it had raided certain locations in North 24 Parganas district in connection with a ration distribution scam case. The attack on the ED team occurred when it reached near Trinamool leader Sheikh Shahjahan's residence. He was subsequently arrested in connection with the assault. Over 200 locals, all believed to be the TMC leader's supporters, encircled the ED officials as well as the armed paramilitary forces accompanying the team when they tried to raid his residence in connection with the ration scam probe. The loyalists circled the officials and demonstrated before assaulting them and forcing them to leave the area. They attacked the officers when they tried to break the lock of the gate, which the TMC leader did not open despite multiple calls made by the ED officials.
