The word ‘feminism’ has garnered a lot of attention in the recent past, with women from across the globe standing up and advocating equality of the sexes. The widespread awareness of the
movement—through movies, campaigns, talks, and discussions etc— has already shown results in various fields, with women entering areas where they were previously forbidden. But there’s a lot more still that needs to see the light of day, the struggle for which is continuing.
With Independence Day being around the corner, we at You & I acknowledge some strong women from different fields—some from the bygone era and some from present day—who have made a mark for themselves, and are known to be the flag bearers of the term feminism, in their respective lines of work.
On the cover is another strong woman—Taapsee Pannu—draped in a hand woven saree with bold Benaras designs and bidri work. The actress made her mark in the southern industry with films like Daruvu, Aadukalam, and Mogudu but it was her Bollywood film Pink that set the stage for her as an unconventional actor. She too, through her recent films, supports the notion of gender equality.
In People we have Uma Chigurupati who, along with her husband, runs a pharmaceutical company as well as a brand of wine. The spirit of womanhood is greatly instilled in her and she believes that “work and education are important for all—whether men or women”.
Mourya Boda takes us through her voyage in Russia’s St. Petersburg and Moscow, through Grand Getaways. Her trip, with her immediate and extended family of 11, was a powerhouse of history and culture.
