Our community is made up of a vibrant mix of women, and several times each year we celebrate days devoted to them – like Mother’s Day, Women’s Day, Daughter’s Day and so on. This time around, we thought it fitting to dedicate this issue to Sindhi women who are not only an integral part of every family, but also actively partake in all kinds of businesses and professions – from being doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, politicians, farmers, bankers, and chefs to anything else that you could probably think of. This issue celebrates ‘being a woman’. Girls, this one’s for you.

Speaking of inspiring women, on the cover, we have the fearless Nazo Dharejo from Sindh, Pakistan. When we first heard about Nazo, the woman who fought against 200 armed men in the dead of the night to claim her right over her family land, we realised that we had gained access to one of the most powerful tales of valour in recent times. Her story however, stretches beyond geographical limits, to touch upon subjects like political clout, corruption, patriarchy, inequality and women’s rights. On the upside, it’s also a tale about love, respect, parenthood, and of course, heroism.

And in keeping with the theme, The Sindhian has been busy interviewing some really wonderful women in a variety of roles, living around the world. For the first time you might see a Sindhi woman bodybuilder, Kanchi Advani, who won the all India title in March. Deepti Sadhwani made a career out of emcee-ing and will feature in her first film this year! Zumba instructor Kiran Kotwani explains to us how it changed her life. Chef Dhwani Agarwal shares her story of spreading happiness through food. Author and life coach Goldie Uttamchandani told us how she guides today’s youth through the challenges of growing up in a multi-cultural environment. And while the Khemlani sisters from London told us about their foray into the world of fashion, Bhavana Motwani spoke about battling standardised fits with bespoke design and e-tailoring services for women in India.

We talked to artisanal lifestyle brand owner Minash Bablani about how her products were simplifying the lives of women on the go. Neha Changwani, a young interior designer with a passion for all things beautiful, spoke to us about her creative endeavours. Dubai-based yoga practitioner Payal Khanwani found the right balance in life and is on her way to helping others achieve it too. Resham Samtani spoke her mind about empowering women with a specially crafted series of confidence building and public speaking workshops. Hairstylist and hair expert, Ritu Gehani shared her start-up story and love for all natural ingredients. Roma Narsinghani’s cutting-edge metal jewelry impressed us, and singer/songwriter Anushka Shahaney's soulful voice told us that she was only just getting started!
