In India, various consumer legislations have been implemented to protect the consumers since independence. Still Indian consumers are exploited in many ways. These exploitations have forced consumers to unite together to defend their interests. Accordingly, a number of Voluntary Consumer Organisations (VCOs) have been formed in the country for protecting the interest of consumers. The present study is undertaken to appraise the functioning of VCOs in the state of Punjab. For this purpose, data was collected through interview-cumquestionnaire technique from all registered VCOs in Punjab state. It is found that main objective of majority of the VCOs was to educate the consumers so as to increase the awareness about their rights and to guide them for taking redressal. Most of the organisations are also handling consumer complaints. The major hurdle in the advancement of VCOs was found to be the problem of funds.
