This article discusses the relationship between religiosity/spirituality and health, as well as the psycho-physiological mechanisms involved therein. It presents a brief history of the causes of illnesses and modes of cure. It discusses critically the notions of mind-body relationship and role of psychology (mind) in determining health status. The article also reviews the studies on relationship between religious or spiritual practices and various physiological symptoms of sound health. Further it discusses the effect of yoga and spirituality on mental and physical health in Indian context. In addition it postulates theoretical conceptualisations regarding cognitive and psychological mediators of link between religiosity/spirituality and sound health. The article stresses upon the need for further studies to understand the physiological mechanism of the effect of religious and spiritual practices on health using stronger research methodology.
