About this issue

The study focuses on the interplay between air pollution and behaviour along with the health effects of the air pollution in humans living or working in highly polluted areas. The influence of air pollution on human behaviour is assessed through individuals’ attitudes comprising awareness of the existence of air pollution, feelings and overt behavioural responses regarding the air pollution. The present study was a field experimental study which included psychological, psychosomatic and physiological parameters. The sample consisted of 50 adult males working/living in the highly polluted areas and other 50 living in the least polluted area of Rohtak city. In an earlier survey conducted in these areas, it was found that the people exposed to prolonged air pollution had reduced pulmonary functioning showing decreased stamina in comparison to those living in less polluted areas. The present study extends itself to psychological and health related effects. A self report questionnaire; General Health Questionnaire; breathing rate and Spirometer measuring Forced Vital Capacity and Maximum Voluntary Ventilation, has been used for recording different forms of responses. Interview and observation method was used for detailed information. Findings are discussed in view of implication for cognitive functioning and neurological disorders etc. Subjects living in air polluted areas displayed higher psychological distress (low well-being) and low perceived general health. In case of pulmonary indices, poor forced vital capacity, less maximum voluntary ventilation and higher breathing rate were observed in subjects from air polluted areas in comparison to those living in the less polluted areas.
