About this issue

Disease severity of cancer has generally been understood within the biomedical perspective. Most research has linked disease stage and treatment phase to health related outcomes such as, coping, well being and quality of life. In the present study, it was proposed that cancer patients’ perceptions of their disease severity can be important in determining their reactions to disease. A scale was constructed in order to gauge the perceived illness severity in cancer patients. Initially, thirty cancer patients were interviewed in order to understand their conceptualisations of disease severity. The interview responses were analysed and dimensions of perceived severity were identified. At the second step, one eighty five oncology patients completed the 61 item questionnaire of perceived illness severity. Factor analysis revealed that there were 12 underlying dimensions of perceived illness severity: Physical aspects, body-image, controllability, subsidiary effects, social relationships, duration of disease, social comparison, treatment side-effects, psychological effects, changed perspective towards life, hospital environment and label of cancer as a severe disease. The results of the study suggested that it is important to understand cancer patients’ perceptions regarding their illness condition on multiple dimensions.
