The study examines the predictive power of internal resources, like future orientation, optimism, and personal control and external resources of family environment in maintaining quality of life in patients afflicted with chronic diseases, as well as, their healthy counterparts. The sample comprised of 235 (180 chronically ill patients and 55 non patient healthy controls) participants. Data were subjected to descriptive statistics, correlation and multiple regression analyses. Results show that internal resources of perception of control and optimism explain maximum variance in predicting quality of life. However, external resource of relationship in family also emerged as a significant predictor of quality of life in the case of chronically ill patients. In the collectivistic culture of India relationship in family was the best resource which made the sufferers perceive life worth even facing life threatening situations. Results were discussed in the light of developing an intervention program.
