The educated women has realized she cannot remain confined to the four walls of her home if she has to play her multifaceted role, for she must be progressive enough to accept the new challenges and social changes overtaking the country, she realizes she is on the level with man, his equal and not his subordinate. In fact the Indian women is moving towards an ideal balance of traditional and progressive values. When a married women takes upon employment she has to perform two roles. Her first role is of a wife/ housewife, and second of a wage earner. Both these roles demand on her time and energy, but she is often unable to perform both the duties satisfactorily. She is quite often torn between conflicting pulls of dual role. She tries to maintain harmony and happiness in her married and family life, but in doing so, her employment is likely to affect her entire personality and family and social relationships. The significance of the present study can be understood if one tries to see the different types of conditions prevailing in the home of an employed woman. The working women face the problem which non-working women do not face. The main purpose of the present study is to compare working and non-working women regarding marital adjustment and social distance. To collect the data of the present study, a sample of 300 i.e., 150 working and 150 non-working women has been taken. The obtained results revealed that significant differences were found between working and non-working women in terms of social distance and marital adjustment. No significant relationships were found between social distance and marital adjustment among working and non-working women.
