The tale of the Scions of the Cursed King spans the six seasons of the Indian year, and starts in Grishma Ritu, the summer. It is the tale of the children of Veerendra, the old king of Ninyasthala, who is ready to abdicate the famed serpent throne. The eldest prince, Bhuvendra, is to be crowned king on the day of Guru Poornima, but the ill-fated day starts with a death and puts an end to the ceremony. Athmika, the spirited princess and our heroine, deals with the calamities befalling her family and kingdom, with the help of her sister, Tarika. They learn the details of a deadly curse upon the king, when he summons his children to reveal what had been kept a guarded secret for decades.
Scions of the Cursed King is the tale of a king cursed by the snake people; every heir to the throne dies before he is crowned. Athmika, his daughter, refuses to blindly accept the curse but fight it, and in the process encounters not the source of the curse but discovers treachery in unlikely quarters.
