Hello Friends, This issue is themed on our favourite part of a school day—Recess! Because, it stands for all the fun things school is and can be! So go, make the biggest, the most colourful, the gaudiest poster you possibly can and list down all the things you intend to enjoy about school, this year. If you are one of the lost ones, take some tips from Saashi and gang in School’s In ;) And remember—don’t just think about doing things, do it! Speaking of doing, here’s a question for you all that’s been on my mind for some time—what do you do, what do you feel when someone challenges you? Challenges you to eat your tiffin faster than anyone else or challenges you to jump as high as you can to reach that fruit dangling off the tree in your school ground? Do you feel the urge to prove them wrong? Rub their noses into the ground with your victory over the challenge? Or would you rather slink away, lest a particularly embarrassing challenge gets thrown your way. How about pausing to think? Will the challenge prove to be fun? Check. Will it cause serious harm or injury? Uncheck. Will it test our abilities and stretch them a bit more? Check! Check! The best challenges are the last kind because there are so many new things that we can learn about ourselves, only if we are willing to test ourselves. We find we can jump a little higher than we thought we were capable of. Or that we can run a little faster than the pace we got breathless at. Perhaps we can understand a little better the mysteries of those subjects that used to flummox us. And then there are the fun challenges—discovering that learning to swim, to cycle, to dance, to sing and do all the wonderful things which we yearn to, is not so tough after all. So are you willing? Are you up for a challenge? I hope you all spend your new school year testing yourselves and your abilities and having great fun doing it! Meanwhile, we will be very sad to lose one of our beloved writers, Shruti. She's moving on to 'greener' pastures and I'm sure you all will join me in wishing her the very best. Also this July, some of us will be celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr with the sighting of the crescent moon. So hugs and happiness to all, and loads of goodies to eat! Affectionately yours, Rajani PS: Tinkle Folktales: Do you know of a fun folktale you’d like to see in Tinkle? Ask your mom, dad, grandparents, teachers, and elders for a folktale and send the story to us. Don’t forget to mention the region the folktale is from. Our email and post addresses are given right below. FYI: We have the World UFO Day on the 2nd, NASA’s New Horizons mission approaching Pluto tentatively on the 14th and World Tiger Day on the 29th.
Tinkle started as a fortnightly children’s comics magazine, in 1980. Under the guidance of editor-founder, Anant Pai, the brand evolved the tagline ‘Where learning meets fun’. It was one of the first few children’s comics magazines with Indian content at that time. Till then children were reading syndicated foreign comics, – Archies, Phantom, Mandrake – translated into Indian languages. In Tinkle, children could read folktales from all over the world as well as stories revolving around the Tinkletoons. Many of these characters have evolved into icons such as Suppandi, Shikari Shambu, Tantri the Mantri, Kalia the Crow, etc. Over the years, newer characters have stepped into the Tinkle pages. These include the Defective Detectives, Butterfingers, Sea Diaries, etc. Apart from comics, the magazine also engages readers with several educative non-fiction pages including puzzles, do-it-yourself crafts, solve-it-yourself mysteries, knowledge features on a wide range of subjects and contests. Though intended as a magazine for children between the ages of 8 and 14, Tinkle’s reach goes far beyond. Families eagerly look forward to the magazine, every month, across the length and breadth of the country. It is probably not just the entertainment but the unexpected insights that the magazine gives their children that families value. Owing to Uncle Pai’s efforts, Tinkle is also welcomed by educators and school principals and thus holds a position as a recommended magazine for wholesome edutainment.
