The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), a science-fiction novel by H. G. Wells, recounts the bizarre adventures of Edward Prendick on Doctor Moreau’s island. Prendick, shipwrecked in the Pacific Ocean, is rescued by Doctor Moreau's assistant, Montgomery. He is taken to the doctor's island, where he learns that the doctor has been carrying on gruesome experiments on animals. Witnessing and experiencing many horrors on the island, Prendick, with much struggle, eventually manages to escape to England. But once back in the civilization, he finds himself no longer comfortable in the presence of humans, who appear to him like they will regress to an animal state.
