Our May issue, dedicated to the newly updated Indian design aesthetic, features Mumbai-based artist Sabeena Karnik who innovatively creates a variety of shapes through quilling. You may recall her work for Google Doodle on the occasion of Independence Day last year where she intricately quilled the Parliament House in saffron, India’s national birds and the Ashoka Chakra, flanked by two peacocks, in shades of blue and green. Using only paper to create this issue’s masthead, Sabeena hopes for quilling to become a popular art form. “Quilling is something that you learn in a hobby class; no one, in my sphere of knowledge, really thought of taking it to the next level. I wanted to break that barrier.”
