Reflections Two score and ten issues ago, I brought forth a new publication, conceived in breezy optimism and committed to showcasing the enthusiasm and accomplishments of the people of a displaced community. I thought that this should be shared with readers around the world, who needed to be updated on the trials and tribulations experienced by these people as well as the great successes achieved by them. This was clearly the need of the time, to have survived and thrived! In the beginning, there was nine months of considerable market research. My vision was clear, yet somewhat scattered. The new magazine would be fresh, classy, open-minded, alive, innovative, and engaging. I took on a talented consulting editor, outsourced the writing of articles to freelance writers, and located a design team, who got us off the ground without too many bumps. They not only understood the magazine we wanted, but showed us how it would look. I then chose a name, “The Sindhian.” It came from a combination of “Sindhi” & “Indian”. This clearly described its focus. It was going to be about Indian Sindhis who were settled all over the world. In January 2004, we successfully published our very first issue. The cover was simple, yet powerful, and of course, our first! We all loved it. It expressed our vision that we made a choice that established for us and for our readers, The Sindhian’s unique personality. For starters, nearly 100 of our content is about Sindhis. This was a huge accomplishment in the world of small publishing. Without the resources of the corporate giants of the media world, a magazine like this one is a labour of love put together by people who are passionate about what they do. Perhaps, this small-fry category also gives me a lot of editorial liberty. However, it can also be a challenge to keep one’s head above water, both economically and directionally. In the longer perspective, I would like The Sindhian to be available bimonthly rather than quarterly, but who knows what the future holds. For the time being, we keep doing the best we can and produce a well-put-together, inspiring magazine for the Sindhis of the world. I read this somewhere recently - Out of tiny acorns, a mighty oak tree grows! And The Sindhian continues to grow mighty.
