With increasing industrial production, the machine tool industry is in the growth phase. According to the Indian Machine Tools Manufacturers’ Association IMTMA, production of Indian machine tools industry is projected to grow at a CAGR of about 20 per cent till 2020-21, whereas consumption is projected to grow at a CAGR of 15 per cent till 2020-21. The ambitious growth plans of auto, auto components and capital goods industry will drive the demand for machine tools. IPF June 2019 showed how the demand for machine tools will witness a robust growth in the next 4-5 years from current levels on the back of these plans. Automotive is one of the key sectors contributing towards the GDP of the country. The body shops, paint shops, powertrain and assembly lines in automotive industry demands efficiency, flexibility and precision. IPF June 2019 focused on how auto component makers are adopting novel manufacturing technologies to improve productivity and quality of the product. Though imported components account for a major share in many of the systems and sub-systems in the Indian aerospace and defense A&D sector, imports are coming down albeit slowly due to the government’s indigenisation efforts. The size of A&D market that can addressed by small & medium manufacturers is anticipated to go up from Rs 216,000 crore in 2014 to Rs 340,000 crore by 2020.
