The present paper highlights the role of cognitive behavioural intervention
in the management of asthma. A single case study design with preintervention,
post-intervention and follow-up assessments was followed.
Tools used for assessment were asthma symptom checklist, asthma diary,
asthma bother profile, asthma quality of life, Hospital anxiety and depression
scale, and Peak expiratory flow rate meter. Cognitive behavioural intervention
was carried out in 10 twice weekly sessions after pre-assessment. Postassessment
at 8 weeks interval showed significant improvement in asthma
symptoms, distress, anxiety, quality of life and peak flow. Follow up at 12
weeks showed further improvement. Cognitive behavioural intervention
comprised of cognitive restructuring, asthma education, self-management
skills, breathing exercises, imaginary rehearsal, activity scheduling and
homework assignments. In conclusion it appears that, psychological
intervention improves management of asthma.
